EndreWhiteMane: Morning kids, hope everyone is well today.
Just waking up, sore but OK.
Hey Endre, hope you feel better before long, and enjoy your Sunday.

Cheers for sharing moments from your holidays. Looks like the weather's not playing along; hope it improves soon, and that you're having a great time.
So they decided to close one of the bridges that cross the bay AND shut down two stations (with a free bus bridge) memorial weekend. I love the bay but sometimes very poor choices get made here.

Great to see you, Moon, you've been missed. Sorry about the weather, but hope you're having fun all the same.

I have to ask of all our Germans here - is the Donau ever blue? It was that same sad-looking grey when I was there..

Good afternoon fellow threaddites.

Just a heads up in case anyone has missed it in the general page.
I think I need some admonishment for taking such a long break from my project.

HypersomniacLive: Good day to all.

ZenWan: Hi everyone, it's a cool morning here, and I'm listening to some beautiful jazz..

[...]

Good to see you again @HypersomniacLive, I hope that your back is feeling better. Sorry for my rudeness in never replying to your long-ago PM (RIP) but you are one of those who never showed up in my chat list at all, and trying to send you a chat / start a conversation, or whatever silly term they are now using, just gives me GOGspinning.

I tried to find a way to use Galaxy to download some games without installing them, but no luck. Anyone know if that can be done?
Also if it's possible to install games to an external hard drive? .....
avatar
HypersomniacLive: Hey ZenWan,

Rest assured that I've not read any rudeness in the lack of a reply; I'm fully aware of the issues with the chat system and the botched transition of the old PMs - you're among the forty (40) or so contacts I'm missing, so no need to apologise for anything.

I'm not using the Galaxy client, but apparently standalone installers are considered "Extras" and listed along with the actual game extras; have you looked into that option?

Also, I've read several posts from people having a variety of issues if they don't install the client using the default location - could this be the case for you?

As for installing games to an external HDD - have you tried to point the client to yours? From what I'm reading, it's possible to change the install location. I'd assume that if your external HDD is permanently connected to your system, it should work and create the right registry entries, but since the client is in pre-beta state, it may not work.
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond in detail, I'm most grateful. Would you send you a little chat thingy to say thank you if I was able. Sorry that you're missing 40 of your contacts, that is not good news at all.

I hadn't tried Galaxy before, except briefly. When I found I couldn't turn off the public notification of what game I was playing, I exited stage left.
I am happy to hear it's possible to download without installing, will check that out.

My gaming computer only has XP installed - I have a copy of Windows 7 (legit) but didn't install because I didn't want to lose all my programs, some of which I already struggled to install of old disks, and a lot of temp giveaways as well. It works for me as I don't use it to do any web surfing, and I have very tight security.

But it won't run the GOG downloader, and the other one is very slow. I thought I'd see if Galaxy was faster. I am presently downloading games onto an external hard drive hooked up to my laptop, via the GOG downloader, but my connection speed is lousy. That's why I thought I'd try running downloads on both computers.

Will check out your other advice - and thank you once again. I know you don't like Galaxy, so that was help beyond the call of duty. ;-D

Hope you're enjoying your day.

Hi to everyone else, on this sunny Sunday.

Thanks j0ekerr. Not even via Steam, that's amazing of them. :-)

Forgot to say +1 for that, and lots of +1's for Hyper - and of course, for much-missed Moon.

Soreness is just from an honest weeks work. Kinda nice actually. :-)
Hope you're having an enjoyable weekend.

That's a great game, it was a royal pain to get it downloaded, authorized and installed but once your done it's 'offline' and free.

I have no use for Galaxy. What I most certainly don't like is the numerous negative effects its development has on the site.

Regarding your OS - any chance of dual booting? This way you could keep all your old programs, and make use of a newer and more support OS.

And please, no need for thanks, what I did really isn't anything special.

Steam-free is very much appreciated, but it's a bit of a hassle to get it.

Still a nice deal for those interested.

Then it's a good kind of pain, like someone else said.

And yes, it's a kind of pain to authorize and download. A consequence of them copying Minecraft's distribution model. But what are you going to do?

And since I gave someone else my email, I'd better put on my tinfoil hat and start learning how to use a BSD distro.

Let me check your fillings!

Yep, you have to register, make an account and authorize it. Just like Minecraft. Which makes me believe that it's not entirely 100% drm free in the same way that Minecraft is not 100% drm free...

I'm nitpicking.

I don't know about the DRM-free aspect, but I do have multiple throw away and forwarding email addresses.

It's not really DRM free, that being said, the DRM probably consists of a phone home method that checks against updates. I'd also wager that once you've downloaded it, you can play it offline without any limitations.

But since you don't get a standalone installer I wouldn't call it DRM-free.

If this is the case, I fully agree.
I assume that the launcher does not work in a similar way the GamersGate one does?

I don't know how the GamersGate one works. I can't shed any light there.

I'd actually compare it to the Minecraft launcher.
I am somewhat annoyed at a friend of mine, who basically said I'm an idiot for not taking advantage of the offers at G2A.

I'm also annoyed at the fact that he did so with spelling mistakes.
