FearfulSymmetry: Yeah, I really should. This novel still needs some light editing that I haven't been able to find the time for recently, but I should be able to do it in the summer. That's a good-looking cover! I have some basic editing skills myself but I've also been toying with the idea of commissioning a drawing or digital painting for the cover.
If you don't want anything too complicated it's not actually as hard as you think, I quite like the whole stylized cover style and it's much easier to do then a full scene like older covers tended to have. I think that one only took me about an hour or two.. I threw it together for YouWriteOn.com but I actually quite like it.
But as for commissioning something, there are some great freelancing websites out there were you can get stuff like that for pretty reasonable prices (if you're willing to pay £50 - £100 for something good)
avatar
FearfulSymmetry: ... by the end of this week? If all goes well at least. :P Then I have one more week for editing after I return from England, and then I have to hand it in. :)

Basically, I fainted with my head against a wall and I'm still enjoying the results. :) Typing aggravates the injury, but tell that to my thesis.

Unfortunately I haven't published any of my work yet, but I'm thinking about self-publishing one of my sci-fi novels in the summer or so. I don't expect to make much money and I intend on giving it a low price, but we'll see. I'll need to find a proper cover artist first, though. :P

[...]
Is that enough time to get things done the way you want them? Especially with the shoulder injury?

When id you faint, and most importantly, why?

Are you going to England for business or leisure?

Well, you know where to find us when you're ready to publish. :-)

OK, I need to go lie down for a while, my lower back has locked and sitting is not helping. May see you all later.

@FearfulSymmetry
I'll read your reply at first chance.

Yep, that's definitely true. I guess I haven't really settled on what I want yet. Once all my thesis-related crap is out of the way I'll get back to the project. :)

FearfulSymmetry: Write or Die is awesome. I used it religiously two years ago or so. I haven't been using it much recently, but it's an incredible motivator. I especially love the 'delete words if you don't write' mode.

My record stands at 11000, and I think I'm unlikely to beat that anytime soon, especially with the injury. :)

How about Camp Nano? Does that have better timing for you?
I'm unlikely to ever duplicate 10k in a day unless something somewhere goes horribly wrong. ;) I'm torn about the 'delete' mode, but as it's not exactly lightning-quick, it definitely does work.

I've never done Camp Nano, but I just looked and I see that they've gone to two months this year, with the next one in July. July is tempting, although I already know we'll be on the road/visiting family for about a week that month. Now I'm torn. The annual family reunion is much more time-intensive than Thanksgiving, wherein we never do much anyway. ;)

At least you have a good excuse not to be working on it ;)

Sorry to hear about your back! Be careful and don't strain yourself too much. Hopefully you'll feel better soon and we'll see you later. :)

It'll have to do I suppose, the deadline's not moving for anyone. Of course, it's not helping that I'm doing double the usual work because I'm in the Honours program, but I suppose I brought that on myself and it's too late to complain about it now. :P At least the professor's feedback on my first chapter has been very positive.

I fainted because I was ill, and I had the bad luck to faint against the wall. :P I broke open my lip, knocked a tooth out of alignment and scratched some others (that's still not fixed, I think I'll have to live with my slightly lopsided tooth, luckily it's not very noticeable), and injured my neck and left shoulder. I've received physical therapy but the problems are unlikely to completely go away, especially because desk work (which I'm doing a lot of at the moment thanks to my study) makes things worse.

Leisure, although it's technically a university trip. I signed up for fun though and am not planning on completing the course for credits. We're going to England for a week in order to watch several plays and attend classes on Shakespeare in Stratford-Upon-Avon. I'm really looking forward to it.

Haha yes, I'll be sure to let the GOG forum know. :)

Take care Hyper!

Yes, it's a bit extreme, but as you say, thankfully it's not too fast.

Haha, am I giving you bad ideas? I haven't tried a camp yet myself but July is indeed appealing ...

Goooooooood day, everyone!

I hope you have all had an absolutely wonderful weekend?

*lots of happy hugs and some very silly waves*

avatar
moonshineshadow: That is true. And after she has to do all these long working days, I should let her enjoy that ;-)
But I would object to a public display, it is not like everyone needs to know this :P
I saw that you had a great day, that is wonderful to hear. If I did not already have a big happy smile on my face I know that reading that wold have done the trick. *big happy great day hug* :-)

*puts up a big banner and lets off fireworks to tell everyone about Moon feeling great.* :-)

HypersomniacLive: I wish I could, I really do. :(
avatar
EndreWhiteMane: Yeah, me too.;(
That has made me a little sad.

How about a big comforting hug?

*Gives Endre a big comforting hug*

*Sees Hyper slowly backing away.*
*Grabs harpoon gun and fires it through Hypers leg, dragging him to me kicking and screaming*
*Ties Hyper up with the rope from the harpoon gun and gives him a big tight comforting hug*

Sorry to hear your back is still quite painful, Hyper. I hope your feel better soon. *gentle hug so as not to harm your back*

adaliabooks: Evening all :)

Sometimes I really wish I could be more focused and motivated... just been looking through my old files and found all sorts of snippets of stories and my unfinished first attempt at a novel... and you know what? I can write. Some of this stuff is really good (if I do say so myself).
I can't believe I put down so much stuff for that book, 44 chapters worth of planning plus 14k words worth of history. Nevermind the 60k words of the original story that I wrote and discarded before deciding it needed reworking...
Someday, I'll get back round to it...

How is everyone?
I bet that was great to find, seeing all that wonderful work you did. Do you think you will continue the story, or start a new one? What was the story about, if you don't mind me asking?

Sorry to hear your shoulder is painful, but I am glad to hear you are progressing well with your thesis. In regards to your novel, I hope you will give us a link to it when you do decide to publish it, I am sure we would love to read it (I know I would). What kind of Sci-Fi novel is it, if you don't mind me asking? Do you have any ideas for cover art?

Hey DD! Did you have a nice day off? :)

Yes, I sure will! What is it about? I can give you the short blurb (mind you, it's not perfect yet):
When an uninhabited alien planet is discovered, Earth's Council orders the spaceship Triumph to investigate the mysterious world. The ship's crew, consisting of scientists, soldiers and Council representative Daniyah, begins to explore the planet, only to discover that nothing is as it seems. Before long, strange events have them scrambling to leave the planet in a desperate attempt to outrun the danger. However, as they race back towards Earth, Daniyah begins to fear that the true threat is already aboard the Triumph ... and inside the crew's minds.

I'm thinking of maybe having the main character on the cover, along with some of her relevant futuristic gadgets. Otherwise, maybe a shot of the spaceship among the stars? I have a particular fondness for stars. Or the deserted alien planet, with lots of crumbling and overgrown buildings. That would be good too. :P

Hello! *big hug*

I have had an absolutely wonderful day off, just what I needed after a week of hard work. We just stayed at home and enjoyed the lovely sunny weather, but we got so much done and it was just a lovely day.

The story sounds really interesting, I would love to give it a read once you have published it (I love a good Sci-Fi novel). Is it a stand alone novel, or do you envisage it to be part of a series?

Your cover ideas sound great. I hope you are able to get a cover that will do the book proud, and that will be just how you want it.

Is your shoulder will feeling any better?

----------

On another note, it seems the site is playing up quite a bit for me tonight. I guess this will get worse as more people come to GOG and further strain the servers.

Good to hear you had such a great day and were able to relax a bit! :D

Thank you, that's lovely to hear. At the moment it's standalone although the story ends on a slight cliff-hanger. I do have some ideas for a sequel, so who knows, maybe next November?

Yep, I hope so too, but at the same time my funds are limited, so I'll have to settle for something at some point. :P

The shoulder's not too great yet, but it should be better after a night of rest. And I'll get to relax it a bit in England when I'm away from my desk. :)

Yep, the website is acting up for me as well, I get loads of 500s.
