it surprised me the first time, as she was so soft spoken and has such an adorable accent when she spoke English, and even when she was speaking with her family on the phone in German. But when she was angry or shouting her voice just changed completely. :-)

ddickinson: I actually have a copy of The Canterbury Tales in my car, I keep with with me as sometimes my nieces are at the farm and they have been enjoying it. I also like how it seems to have a comic element to it, and it's interesting to see that even after all this time, people are still enjoying the comedy and the writing.

I have read most (if not all) of Shakespeare's sonnets as well. When I was at university the library had his complete works, and I just used to read them while passing some time. I am not sure if I have a favourite, I enjoyed the two you mentioned, as well as things like Hamlet, Julius Caesar, and The Tempest. It's hard to pick as I found many of them enjoyable. The most recent I read was Henry V, and I find it a very nice play, with some good dialogue. I love history, so I tend to enjoy his historical plays quite a lot.
That's nice to hear, I love that your nices are enjoying it as well. And yes, I always think it's amazing how we're still reading things that are hundreds of years old.

Yes, I've read a reasonable amount of his sonnets as well, they're enjoyable. I also like Hamlet a lot, we did a production of it at high school. :) I haven't really read any of the historical plays yet, maybe I should get around to that in my holiday.

Depends on the region the dialect is from. Some are really far different to normal German.

Some of them are. I have trouble understanding some bavarians and swabians - not to mention some Austrian dialects (especially from Tyrol) and Schwyzerdütsch and i assume that other ones might have problems with Plattdüütsch (low german)...

Henry V has some of my favourite dialogues, but again, that is due to my love of history and the battle that the play covers. That is what I love about Shakespeare's plays, they are so varied and there is something for everyone. Be it romance, tragedy, battle, murder, comedy, just about anything.

I have seen quite a few of his plays being acted out, a few in the Globe, but most in play houses. They are usually really good to watch, even if the script is sometimes shortened to a reasonable time, as not everyone is willing to sit through hours and hours of dialogue.

That's interesting. We have regional dialects as well, some which can be difficult to understand, but none that I find too hard to understand. Perhaps we should just let people mash the keys ad type random words, that way no one could translate it. :-)

Generally most of the dialect are understandable but on could argue that examples like the swiss german and the low german could count as seperate languages.
