Can't complain here, just another standard night. Taking a break from Icewind at the moment after clearing another dungeon out, that's about it.

I hope they solve the problem soon. I sometimes lose my internet from time to time, but that is due to me being in a small village in the middle of a very rural area. Usually it's just some damage to the lines, and it is fixed quite quickly.

You know I've been thinking about that, and I happen to have this soapbox right here so...

I have a somewhat schizophrenic relationship with Japan, I admire its culture while at the same time despising it. I read manga and enjoy them, while often facepalming hard at what I read.

But that's neither here nor there. What I meant to say is that translating anything from japanese is a fool's errand.

From what I know, the japanese language is awkward at best. It's both vague and imprecise. Combine this with shyness, and a mindset that makes passive aggression practically a cultural trait. And you have a recipe for a language that's more of a cryptic cypher than a communication tool.

Even if my information comes from admittedly unreliable sources, they are varied enough to paint a rough picture. Japanese language exercises seem to be about filling in the blanks and inferring what is NOT being said. These are not like the english exercises in which you add a verb to an imcomplete sentence. But perfectly constructed, grammatically correct sentences that purposefully leave stuff out.

Add to that, a grammar that is so out there as to be practically alien (seriously, temporal conjugation of adjectives?), and any translation becomes a pain in the ass. What I mean to say is that translating accurately from japanese is pretty much an oxymoron. Which is the reason professional writers are called in to work with translators. A good translation from japanese is one in which you find the meaning behind the original text, then throw that translation out the window and adapt and even rewrite whole paragraphs to convey said meaning. And that, for the reasons stated above, can be quite difficult.

Abridged version TL:DR
Any translation from japanese which simply translates without taking some liberties and rewriting some stuff, will end up sounding full-on pants-on-head retarded.

I suppose Black Lagoon must have gotten a good translator. Although I personally think, the fact that many of the characters are non-japanese allows for greater liberties when translating their speech.

I like the mob thing... quite funny. and the fact you can die for random stupid reasons... but I'm not gonna lie, it's still not a stunning storyline... :-|
