toxicTom: Marathon is a very classic, but rather unknown shooter from the 2.5D era. It used environments like Doom (textured levels, sprite enemies) but was quite ahead of it's time by incorporating a meaningful story told in-game. It came out in 1994, just one year after Doom. It's an early work of Bungie, of Halo-fame. The reason it's rather unknown is that it was for years only available for Mac, and when a PC arrived - time had moved on. It's still a great game, a real classic, and it's also freely available. So if you like the classic shooters, it's definitely worth to give it a try.
I might decide to give it a try someday. I will make a note of it and look into it another day.

I saw earlier that you were talking about the FEAR expansions, and I think at least one of them, if not both, were created by a different studio. Hence the different feel to the game. I did not find FEAR scary like some do, but it was a very good FPS, with some good AI, and an interesting story.

Those are all real time, right? I've only ever played Chaos Gate and Final Liberations - but good, but crashing on me at one point of another,

l0rdtr3k: Marathon is awesome and FEAR is a game that,IMO,does the horror aspect right and creates a perfect atmosphere.
I am glad you enjoyed FEAR. Have you played the expansions yet? I did not find them scary myself, but it's nice it had the desired effect on you while playing.

Since Marathon is free (and ported to modern systems) you can't go wrong. At least you'll have an interesting history lesson on computer games, even if you ditch it after half an hour. :-)

I have Final Liberation on my shelf (physical shelf), I can see it right now. :-)

I love that game, but it's a shame it was not fully finished. It would be a great game to have on GOG, or even given a nice shiny remake. It was a good impression of the actual table top game. A few things would need correcting (like making the Space Marines actually tough, not just regular weak infantry), but other than a few changes to the balancing, and maybe the removal of the moral timer, it would be a great strategy game. I played it a few month ago with one of my brothers. It took a little tweaking to get it working on Windows 7, but it plays fine, and the FMV cut-scenes are a nice touch.

I am not a big drinker, so I have no chance of knowing what beer is from where. Or maybe it is German Beer, and you are just too drunk to know any different. :-)

ddickinson: Now that I searched for it I think you have mentioned the game previously. Are you enjoying the game? What did you think of FEAR?

Is this what you're referring to?

Still halfway through the first game.
I encountered the weirdest bug today. I stopped by the front page and noticed Age of Wonders 3 was still discounted. I checked the promo page and it had expired two hours before. Luckily it got fixed an hour after I reported it, but the price persisted to the checkout page. I never did buy it though so I don't know if it would have worked.
