Yes dry brush is exactly as you described, except that it's not a "shade a bit darker" it's any colour you want.

That's how I got the metallic sheen on the bolter. And some on the breastplate's aquila as well, which is hidden by the bolter.

Priming is absolutely necessary. The first miniature I painted didn't have a base coating and it looked like utter crap.

I always liked black and gold (gold trim) but while I don't know much about Warhammer Marines I DO know that their colors and regalia are very important. I don't want to force you into making your own Chapter and getting laughed out of your next game for bucking canon in the face ;)

I don't have gold, and it's impossible to mix metal colours.

Nah, I only have a few loose miniatures collected over the years.
