l0rdtr3k: I thought Starcraft was always more twich than strategy.
Just rush the opponent with not a care in the world and win instead of,you know, planning a strategy in a strategy game.
My thoughts exactly. The main argument I've seen in favor of these kinds of games is that battlefield decisions need to be made quickly, and quick reflexes are very important on the battlefield; if you don't like it play TBS.

It appears to me the main focus today is being put on the quick reflexes part, instead of the thinking part. Which I guess is natural with the younger influx of new foolish 12-and-less-year-old-kiddies into the gaming community.

And a noxious development I've also witnessed, most of all in video games and movies, is the need for instant gratification. It appears it no longer suffices to hatch a well thought out battle plan against a largely unaware player over the course of an entire match, improvising along the way. In movies one thick joke follows the other in mere secconds, scenes last no longer than a few minutes at best in most popular movies, and everything is more over the top then ever.

Take supreme commander. The mainstream argument going against it is you just blob stuff across the map and hurl it at your enemy, and that "there is a larger focus on base management than on strategic planning".

If there's one thing that you shouldn't be doing in supcom it's blobbing without a seccond thought. While it's true that huge hordes of robots in massive battle lines make up the core of your force, if your just going to hurl them across the map without adequately managing other branches of your army, your economy or flanking moves, surgical strikes, long range support, etc etc and a decent plan, you'll get obliterated.

that took me 18 minutes to cook up

ElTerprise: ... Good to hear. My neck pain mostly gone by now (started yesterday evening) and i'm reading some articles about the remunicipalisation of the power grid in Hamburg and the topic of urban sprawl for university...
Remunicipalisation? Of water no less, very interesting!

A reversal of privatization in any shape or form is a glad tiding, indeed.
(Especially of the vital services...)

Glad to hear your neck pain is mostly gone too, (either physically, or some other form
of "pain-in-the-neck" annoyances).

It was just physical neck pain ;).
Thankfully water wasn't privatized but the power grid was...but we had a plebiscite which demanded the repurchase of the grid by the city. And i hope it'll stay that way :).

Thanks a lot!

I like my cup of coffee with 3 tea spoons of powder, filled halfway (the other half with milk), and a sweetie or two ;p

ElTerprise: Agreed. That's why i'm not compatible with Starcraft and i tried both 1 and 2... (well Story is okay but skirmish or multiplayer...)

I only play ST for the story, qhich is quite the average space western.

SupCom kicked my ass when I tried to rush and rewarded me for actually cooking up a strategy. Also take the likes of Blood Bowl, you need strategy more than anything there not just rushing in and pounding the opposition, which I did early on my playtime.

On a slightly different note;

does anyone know about any games like STALKER?

I don't mind if the game is 1st/3rd person, but I'd like some fancy gunplay, hard survival mechanics, and a decent story.

I'd also prefer if the graphics weren't too good (logistical aspect of getting games to run on a G42/43 integrated intell chipset) ;)

I'd also prefer if you wouldn't recommend any mass effect-esque games, that was one of the most underwhelming gaming experiences I've ever had

Ha! Victory! I've finished the temporary introduction to my thesis! Now on to more fun things.

Great! making a decent introduction is the hardest part in writing. I find that once I've made a good start (which takes most time), everything follows smoothly

Congratulations! Even a rough draft completed is better than a pocket full of notes! :)

Have you taken a look at Rogue Trooper, here on GoG? It's a pretty good 3rd person shooter.

Definitely true. Part of my introduction will likely be revised once I'm done with the thesis, but it's a good start nevertheless.

Thanks! You're totally right about that. Getting started can be super hard. Often these things seem like nearly impossible tasks before you get started, but once you're working on them it seems much more doable. At least that's my experience. :P
Yep my weekend is going fine, just having a lazy Saturday. :P

Might play some more Icewind Dale if my party can get past those hordes of goblins......

I used to give all of my party some ranged weaponry skills (and weapons). I usually had only one Wizard, (who can use slings), and would have everyone get a shot off (or a few) as groups of enemy approached. That and area effect spells, with good timing helps, just make sure not to have any of your party near them when they go off. :)
