FearfulSymmetry: It's very awesome that you do that, I think it definitely makes a difference and it should cheer them up somewhat.
That's the only reason I can keep going. If it wasn't for them enjoying it and actually being happy to see us, then I do not think I could cope with it, as it can be very depressing, especially as some of them do not realise how ill they are, or seeing how bad some of them have things.

He's very sarcastic in a completely deadpan manner, and thus far at least one oblivious commenter hasn't picked up on that and penned a very serious response.
Hi Tyger, that was funny. Having spent years working in an academic environment, I can really appreciate the humour of that. Wonder how many of his students (apart from you) understand what he's saying, if he employs that humour in lectures. Although at your academic level, you probably don't attend lectures any more? Not sure how the system works in the Netherlands.

Thank you! And a big +1 and my sincere admiration for what you do for those children and their families. You must be an empath to relate to them and their families so quickly and so deeply , but that means it's extra hard, and very draining, for you to deal with their pain and loss and bewilderment. They are blessed to have you there.

I think people pick up on his sarcasm pretty quickly. I had him as a professor for one of my very first classes, and for two weeks I was convinced he was a complete asshole. Then I discovered he just has a very peculiar sense of humor. Humor is basically the trademark of our department, and jokes are the order of the day. However, for someone who doesn't know him at all, I guess it would be harder to pick up on.

I do still go to lectures. I'm currently finishing up my bachelor's degree, but even the master degrees have lectures here. Does that work differently in your country?

Little one's birthday party times two...

Tomorrow with family and (our) friends, Sunday with the kindergarten friends. That's why I spent most of the week tidying this place ;-)

Thank you, that is very sweet of you to say. I do not do anything really, I just spend a little time with them and try to cheer them up however I can. It can be quite draining, but overall it is worth it, and it definitely helps me put things into perspective in life.

I would take them but i think the university might refuse them....

I was already preliminary enrolled in the masters programme when i finished my bachelor's degree last semester...and since yesterday I'm officially enrolled in it :).

It depends on how many students there are for the higher degrees. In my field (Philosophy) there were only a couple of us, with very different topics, so it was more 'one-on-one' tutorials.

Glad there's some humour there, some academics can be so puffed-up and dry and pompous that one can hardly resist going after them with a pin.

ddickinson: I do a bit of volunteering every now and then. The children's hospice is a very mixed emotions thing for me, as I mentioned before. But I try to go a few times a month, even if it's only for a an hour or so during the week. Every so often we go for a large chunk of the day on a weekend, usually a Sunday. They love having someone to read with them, and I normally take some classic books with me, which they just love, as for many of them the older books are things they have never heard of, let alone read.
Almost missed this.
That's a pretty awesome thing to do! Let alone considering that your farm work keeps you busy as hell and doesn't care for weekends and holidays.

*big awesomeness hug*
