I've been alpha testing Rimworld. I thought it was buggy, but most of what I thought were bugs were just gaming mechanics I didn't understand. (your colonists don't haul food in prisoner-marked areas) That alpha is really stable, and I'd love to see it on GOG when it's done.

It would be nice to see a game sold that is actually bug free.....
But I don't believe in Santa Claus neither:-)

This phenomenon of devs getting players to beta-test has really helped indie developers. On the other hand, the phenomenon of devs getting players to beta-test has really helped indie developers.

Some do, some dont. and some indie devs make polished, finished products - like banished.

Almost done downloading my GOG games to a zpool, just in case the Galaxy turns out to be one far far away ruled by a guy named palpatine. (It'll probably be ok though. hope never dies)

I've made mods a lot bigger than that game.....
Sorry, but no pats on the back for such a small game.....:-)

Didn't know that. Gives me hope that my own endeavours my bear fruit one day. Unfortunately that would mean I would have to stop spending so much time playing games, so I have more time to work on them... XD

Most of the data in games is just that, data. It's the complexity of the mechanics and size of the game scripts we have to account for when determining how impressive it is when a game is bug-free. Banished has very basic graphics. Proving your point, it has relatively simple game mechanics, although i'm sure the pathfinding and AI took a bit of work.
Didn't take into account skeletal animation systems, and other types of animation data. that stuff is hard to make afaik

Any how I'm sure his making some good money now and I'll bet his next game will be bigger
and he will have someone under him....The thing is will he rush out the next game or be bug
free?I'm tipping it will be a lot bigger and not bug free...

Let's just hope you're wrong about that. If it sucks I'll just not buy it, or wait for a sale. Bought Banished full price cause It looked good. Was not disappointed. - and now it has mods.

I'm making a '2d grid of cubes' tech demo with advanced pre-rendered sounds. maybe I'll just learn OpenAL instead.

I was in the very early stages of making a 4x game, but haven't really done anything for a few weeks due to hitting some bumps and being busier with work. Currently toying with making a roguelike after playing ToME, it's something I've always wanted to do and the ToME engine is free (and open source I believe) so it might not even be that difficult... (famous last words those)

To be honest I've never really looked at sounds / music... I've always figured if I actually got so far with a project that they would be required I could learn what I needed then, but have yet to reach that point yet. Which should tell you a lot about how far I usually get with my ideas...

same here, for the last 4 years I've made 3d graphics and no sound. Now I've figured out how to play a sound in my collection of game libaries, been making indoor gunshots using the first bit of outdoor gunshots and audacity reverb.

Is it just for fun or are you working on something?
Playing with sounds can be a lot of fun, audacity is great. I remember one computer I used to have came with some kind of sound lab thing from the makers of the sound card that let you add echo and reverb and all sorts to recorded sounds or music files. Had a lot of fun with that..
