It's the weekend. Things generally get much quieter then, unless a large sale's going at the time.

Ixamyakxim: What's a fanvid?
Basically, a video of something you're a fan of (usually a film or tv series) set to music, although some are more like trailers.

Ah, neat! Thanks!

Dying in Tales of Maj'Eyal.

Got to the point where I can reach about level 6 or 7 and clear the opening dungeon for each race / class most of the time, but then I pretty much die as soon as I try and do anything else... presumably because I don't know which areas are the next ones I should visit, and which ones are the super hard shouldn't go there till much later in the game ones...

CarrionCrow: Additional - Just when I was starting to get my hopes up about Square...

I'm playing Bravely Default. Everything about it screams old-school Final Fantasy game.
But...I was just given a tutorial on a game mechanic that only recharges by putting the 3DS in sleep mode for 8 hours.

That's red flag number one. If I wanted timers, I'd be playing a browser game.

But then the hammer falls. I can circumvent that restriction by getting a certain game item and using it.
A game item that can only be purchased with real money. -shakes head-
Just remembered I read this earlier and meant to reply.

It's a pretty shitty extra mechanic, but I think I only needed to use it once (the stopping time and extra actions isn't really much use, but the fact it lets you break the 9999 damage limitation can be. I think I managed about 40000 damage, but some of the attacks I've been sent by others were far far more powerful) and only used it a few other times mainly for fun.
It's pretty easy to hit ridiculously high amounts of damage later in the game without having to resort to paying for SP.

Also, this thread appears to be so big that the search no longer works... I kept getting GoG bear'd while trying to use it. XD

I'm not exactly thrilled about seeing things I'd expect out of a Facebook "game" in a current release of a supposedly singleplayer RPG.
Will take this as another reminder that unless I'm bulk buying a pile of older games for next to nothing, I need to do full research for every title, every time.

It was a bit amusing in an unpleasantness sense, at least.
I was thinking that maybe Square was getting the point a little, maybe shifting back to something good, making something of quality with no bullshit added.

And then I saw the SP thing. And the village thing. Made for a fun whiplash effect and a few minutes of me cursing them in general for being such fucking idiots.

Also, to be completely honest, I made sure to curse myself for trusting them to not screw up somehow, as well.

Village thing is also mostly pointless (to be honest, I'd forgotten either mechanic existed) other than for getting access to (as far as I remember) a couple of nice items in the end game.

The game is by no means perfect, but I think it's as close as modern Square will ever get to the SNES games they used to make... which is a real shame because I absolutely love some of their SNES games.

Unfortunately I think more and more companies will try and sneak this kind of stuff into games (and to a certain extent I can't blame them... if companies like Zynga, Rovio and King can make millions out of selling in game items to gullible morons it's easy to see the appeal, especially if your company is struggling a bit)
Even Nintendo are doing it now... :/
Although having said that, I'm quite enjoying their free-to-play Pokemon match 3 game...

I would say you're right. I doubt they'll ever get back to a Final Fantasy 6/Secret of Mana 1-level of quality.
They're too busy trying to make the prettiest garbage instead.

And yes, you're also right on that one. Companies will try putting in more microtransactions because some people are dumb enough to pay for them.

Upshot of having a ridiculous amount of games stockpiled - If nothing else, if the whole games industry sickens me too much, I can hole up with what I have and be good for 3-5 years, probably.

This one is for the yearly Obi-Wan/Padmé convention (yes, that's a thing :P).

But on the plus side, the people who made those games great no longer work for Square and have their own studios. They're now making games like Xenoblade and (the not quite as good, but still interesting and fun) The Last Story. So while Square is a shadow of it's former self, great JRPGs are still being made :)

It's true. I've been tempted many times to just churn out some rehashed puzzle game for Android with built in micro transactions to make a quick buck, but I love my hobby and I just couldn't do it. When I finally knuckle down and make a game I want it to be something I would play myself, not a soulless cash grab...

There are still hundreds of great games from the last 20 or so years that I have yet to play (or probably even hear about in some cases) so at least I know I'll never run out of good stuff to play, but I'm ever hopeful that at least some new releases will be as good as my favourite classics.
Good evening everybody :)

l0rdtr3k: Searched a Borderlands tweak guide and after some .ini tweaking, the game finally runs fine.
Borderlands 1 or 2? What tweaks? I'm asking because i used some config tool for tweaking the FOV in Borderlands 1.

Between SMT and Etrian Odyssey, Atlus feels like a good horse to bet on when it comes to JRPG's on the 3DS.
Also looking forward to Xenoblade, have to see if there are other games to clear first so I'm not missing backstory.

Real life doesn't always allow for noble principles to win out.
So if you find you have to? Make the shitty cash-gouging rehash. Beats going hungry.
Just don't make it your legacy.

Right. Despite the industry's ignoble attempts to effectively bury its own past at times to keep people clamoring for the newest (and frequently shittiest), there's still plenty to play.
And speaking of new releases, seriously hoping that Original Sin, Wasteland 2 and Pillars are the latest items to actually have good quality.
