CarrionCrow: I hope yours was good also.
I had a wonderful day, thank you. I always enjoy spending the time with my partner and my family, it means so much more to me than all the presents.

So, how many of you are making New Years resolutions this year? I never do serious things for my resolution, only little things. If they are serious, I do them straight away, rather than wait for a specific day to start. One of mine is to not buy any of the low quality, over priced indie games that we keep getting. I am not usually a snob for graphics, but I'm tired of all these developers using the indie title as an excuse for sloppy, low quality games, games that make 20 year old games look advanced.
avatar
Grargar: Just a heads up as GOG hasn't posted a relevant headline/thread, there is currently a 6-day Square-Enix promo running with all Square-Enix games (except for Gex), discounted by 75%.
avatar
adaliabooks: Yeah, just seen that. I should pick up the Hitman games at some point. I loved the first two, and the third one was what stopped me PC gaming (it never worked on my old laptop and I stopped spending money on games I couldn't play after that)
Is the second one recommendable for someone who liked Codename 47 because of its resemblances with Tomb Raider 2?^^
I have it in my library but didn't have time yet to play it...

Yeah, best bit of Christmas for me is making mountains of food with my partner (we love cooking) and then spending a week eating it all :)

I've never really done New Year resolutions... never really saw the point, like you say if you want to change something why wait till New Year to do it?
I will be trying to put more time into various things next year though. Get loads of work on, make some real progress on my game idea, and learn to play guitar properly.

I haven't really played any of the Tomb Raider games, so I couldn't say what it's like. But the second game is very like the first as far as I remember (it's been years since I played though)

I usually make silly resolutions, or things I wouldn't mind doing, but that are not important, so if I don't do them then it's no big deal. I'm thinking of learning an instrument and a language next year, though I'm not quite sure which instrument or language yet.

It wouldn't be Christmas without too much food and having to ear leftovers for days. If you don't mind me asking, what is your game idea?

Languages are one of the few things I've never had any success with. I don't know why but I have always struggled with languages. I'm not great on the guitar, I've never really gotten far when teaching myself. But after watching the Foo Fighters Sonic Highways series I really want to learn again.

It's a grand strategy / 4x game (I know, I like to start small and simple ;) ), kind of a cross between Paradox's titles like Crusader Kings and Civilisations, but with more detail in the combat and management of cities. So the running of the cities themselves is like a simplified city builder game, and the battles play out in more detail (right now I'm thinking like tabletop wargames like Warhammer). Lots of other little bits and pieces too, like RPG style quests you can send your nobles on to kill dragons and clear dungeons. Of course I'm teaching myself to program in Python and use Panda3D while making it.... :D

I'm thinking of trying to learn Japanese, no real reason why, it's just one that jumped out at me. As for the instruments, I'm torn between the piano and the violin, though I think it will be the piano.

That's sounds very interesting. I bet that is a lot of hard work, especially when teaching yourself, but it makes for a great hobby, and when it's finished, you might find yourself as a full fledged game designer. I hope you're going to release it DRM free? :-)

Good luck with the game, I know very little about programming (I have done a bit of C++ and Objective-C, but nothing serious), but I hope all the hard work will pay off and you manage to make the wonderful game you are planning.
If anyone's reading this, there's an entitled asshat spamming our forum with the same shit. For the sake of our great community please help us combat the threat. There'll be cookies and milk for the volunteers

Sounds good. What improvements have been made from the first to the second Hitman game?
Good morning everyone.
The Square Enix promo looks very nice. The forums... not so much.
I can finally take my hat off. It is very liberating.

I only make birthday resolutions. (Only a few days apart, so it doesn't really make a difference :-P)

But seriously - I bought The Longest Journey in 2005, and still haven't played it. I want to finally start playing it for our 10th anniversary :-)

Probably most of us here are already doing that :D

I would think Japanese would be quite hard... I'm apparently very good at pretending to play the violin... <_< >_>
Never tried it for real though.

I've always loved programming, it is a lot of fun and very interesting. I would love to finish it and sell it, I've never managed to before but I'm determined this time. If I manage to get far enough I'll probably put it on Kickstarter and see if I can raise money to get it properly finished.

I do of course plan to release it DRM free, here if possible :)

Having looked at it again, it's actually the second game and the third I have played (and the third is kind of a remake of the first). So I'm not sure what the improvements are... It's an excellent game though, so I would highly recommend playing it. Especially if you enjoyed the first one.

I think Japanese is quite hard to learn, but I don't mind, I love a challenge. I'm not intending to be fluent in a year, I know it will take time, especially as I will be doing it by myself and not all the time, but it's just something to help occupy my time.

I will probably start with the piano as my first instrument, but I might still change my mind by new year.

It's good that it's something you enjoy, and even if it takes a while, I'm sure you will have it finished. Kickstarter sounds like a good idea, and there will definitely be some on here who would love to support it. Feel free to use this thread if you ever need advice on any part of the game, not just technical but other things, like the story etc. There are lots of cool girls and guys on here who would love to help.

Something like that. I think half the levels are remade improvements of the first game, and half are new. Also an excellent game.

I'll stick with programming to occupy my time, like I said I never had much luck with languages.

Piano is a good choice, very versatile.

Yeah, I've started things loads of times but always lost the drive or interest. Bit more committed this time so hopefully will get it finished.

Yeah, I will be asking advice when required :)
