Yay, I'm awake again. Not sure when I went to sleep or for how long, but oh well. -laughs-

Hey, everyone. =)

Maybe I'm running behind, but GOG finally did officially say that they weren't going to sell the Commandos series to anyone in Germany.
Pretty sure those games center around killing Nazis, so banning them makes no frigging sense to me, but that's weird, ass-backwards garbage for you.

adaliabooks: I haven't read The Count of Monte Cristo but I probably should as I absolutely loved The Three Musketeers.
I'm a bit hit and miss with classical books, I would love to read more but in an attempt to read some classics I picked up Don Quixote and The Three Musketeers and while I usually finish a book in a few days if I'm reading quickly or a few weeks if I'm reading it on and off, I think I read Don Quixote for about 8 months, and only got about half way. Not sure if it was a bad translation, it's age, or just that it's a really difficult book to read, but I had to keep rereading bits to try and understand what was going on... it almost put me off reading altogether :/
But I love The Three Musketeers and have read it numerous times (and would probably class it amongst my favourite books) but I'm wary of picking up other classics in case they prove as difficult a read as Don Quixote was...
That can be said about books in general, but I guess it would apply more to literature from a different era. You are never going to like every classic, but some of them are wonderful books, and well deserving of their reputation.

adaliabooks: Edit: And some quotes, because why not :)
Because after all this time on GOG, you still get italic tags wrong. :-)

moonshineshadow: You are right a lot of the modern book are just the same in a different disguise. That is why I really like the books by Brandon Sanderson, he has a lot of great ideas and the books are never boring or give me the feeling of being all the same.
So would be the Count of Monte Cristo a book you would recommand if I wanted to have a look at classic books again or is there something else even better for that purpose? Since it has been some years since I last read some classics I would not mind having a look at another one since tastes changes, so perhaps I would like such a book.
Hmm, that's a hard question. I guess it depends on what kind of book you want. What kind of genre are you interested in reading at the moment and I will see if I can think of a classic to recommend?

Hey, D. =)

I woke up with some thought about the house burning to the ground, so I imagine my brain was going full speed despite being asleep. Other than that, I think it was okay. -laughs-

How's your night going?

Very true, but I've never struggled to read and comprehend a book as much as I did with Don Quixote and it has made me very wary... (Just as any number of modern rubbish books have made me wary of buying modern books)

There are a number of classics I would love to read, The Illiad and The Odyssey for a start, but I don't spend much time reading at the moment and I tend to stick to quicker and easier reads..

Not sure what went wrong.. it was the right tag, and worked in my Barefoot Essentials preview but some of the characters I copied must have broken it...

It's all those games, they haunt you even in you dreams. :-)

My night had been okay, a little dull as my partner has been in bed most of the day due to having a bad case of flu, but other than that no complaints.

Regarding the Commandos games, could it be to do with the game showing the Swastika? I remember someone saying this was not allowed in Germany.

Hmm... that is hard to answer. Since I am normally reading mostly fantasy books. That is why I do not really have a clue where I could start reading classics.

Your taste in books sounds similar to mine (I loved Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn books and mostly read fantasy too) so I would heartily recommend The Three Musketeers. As is always the case, any TV or Movie adaptation you've seen does the original book no justice.

ddickinson: Regarding the Commandos games, could it be to do with the game showing the Swastika? I remember someone saying this was not allowed in Germany.
Theoretically yes. But this laws are quite confusing and a mess. It is not allowed to be sold in Germany. But you are allowed to import the game if you are an adult. So I think the reason gog is not selling them is because they would need to do an age verification. But on the other side this is also true for games that are on the index (like Mortal Combat, Harvester, ...) but these are sold to Germans here on gog. So I have no real idea how gog decided to handle things.
But at the moment it seems like they are only blocking games for Germans that are "Beschlagnahmt", which are only 16 games at the moment (or even less, I did not check all of them to see if for some the ban might have been lifted).
I like the truly ancient books, I mean really old, like the ones I had in 2nd grade.
"See Spot Run", ah, the fond memories. :-)

Sometimes the difficulty comes from the difference in language, or a poor translation.

The Illiad is a wonderful book, one of my childhood favourites. The Odyssey is good as well, they are both good example of classic Greek epics. If you do get The Illiad, see about the Richard Lattimore translation.

How do you pick/find new books to read? Have you ever used Goodreads.com?

You have to put a new set of tags for each line-break (when you press enter). I'm not sure if this is a bug or how it has always been.
On an entirely different note: I almost answered the telephone "Hello, this is Endre" at work today.

It'd make more sense if I was dreaming that the characters from bad games were in the house.
Then it burning to the ground would be totally logical, since it'd be me doing it to protect the world from the garbage. -laughs-

The flu is always unpleasant. Are they improving yet, or is it still in the having to suffer through it stage?

I'm figuring the swastikas are the reason. Have heard it mentioned before, and it's a WW2 game so there's probably some imagery that the government finds disagreeable.
Still idiotic, though. It's not like they're going to eradicate the image from the minds of every citizen by banning something that shows it.

-laughing hard- That would have been interesting.

I put a voice mail message on the phone as C.C. It worked too, no one leaves messages. ;)

I recently enjoyed a book called Phantastes by George MacDonald. It is considered one of the cornerstones of Fantasy literature, and is credited for helping to inspire authors such as Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

I will have a look at my books tomorrow to make some more personal reconsiderations, but in the mean time, here is a list of some Fantasy classics listed on GoodReads.
