AgentBirdnest: My doctor told me that I need to have a gluten-free diet. I heard that as "Hey! Time for you to find a new doctor!"
avatar
ddickinson: I'm no expert, but from what I have read there is little to no evidence about the benefits of the whole gluten free thing. Yes some people are intolerant, and for them it makes sense, but not for everyone to be doing it. I mean think about it, how long have humans been eating foods containing gluten, and we seem to be doing quite well as a species? I feel it's just another fad, another health bandwagon for everyone to jump on to.

I am glad your thyroid problem is nothing serious. *big random hug*
Hey everyone.

I agree, their was a study where they took people with apparent intolerances and put them into groups of people who were actually eating gluten, and just told they were and both groups had the same symptoms. There are obviously people with gluten allergies, like there are people who are lactose intolerant, but it's a much smaller percentage then people would like you to believe.

Hope everything turns out ok for you Agent. My mother has some Thyroid problems and I think she just needs to take tablets and it doesn't cause her much trouble, so if it is something like that it should be easily manageable hopefully :)

LaPtiteBete: Hello DD !! **Big good morning Hug**
How are you doing ?
(I totally agree with you about the gluten free diet... it cannot solve everything...)
Hello, Owl! *Even bigger return hug*

I am doing okay today, a little tired due to lack of sleep but otherwise I'm doing okay. It's cold today but the sun is out and it looks like a lovely rain free day.

How is your day so far?

The gluten-free thing will solve very little. As I said we have been eating it for a long time, it it was really that bad for you people wouldn't be living to 100+ years. It's just the latest health kick, something to blame for problems and to help corporations sell more gluten-free food. If you look at a lot of the research into gluten-free, you will see that much of it is backed by companies and people with an interest financially in gluten-free food.
Hi, Adalia !
How are you doing ?... I hope you feel a little better ?...

Mine too :) The takes hormonal medics for about 10 years for a hypothyroidism and she's doing great. No more symptomes and no side-effects... The "most difficult" (which wasn't really difficult) thing was to find the perfect dose for her...

Good morning (for a few more minutes)!

How are you feeling today? I hope you and your partner are doing okay after your sad news yesterday? *big hug*

You are right about the tests they do, if you ever read the scientific papers for a lot of the "health" food that they try to sell (like the small health drinks with friendly bacteria), you will find a lot of lies, manipulation, and misinformation. It's surprising how far companies will go just to try to scare people into using their product.

Unfortunately this is true of so many things. It's difficult to know what to believe any more because everyone's got an agenda. Practically every set of trials that has shown something to be good or bad for you has been backed by someone who had a vested interest in a specific result when you look into it... And if they don't get the result they want it just never gets talked about..

Heh... welcome to my lack-of-sleep world !! ^^ \o/
Glad the weather is shiny at your place... Here it's all grey with a cold little rain... >__<
My day is going.... not bad. I feel cold and a bit tired, but quite fine otherwise... :)
Do you work outside today ?

Very true. That's why so many people now are opting for locally grown fresh food. They are tired of all the chemicals, additives, and false advertising.

Thanks both, a bit better today. Still crying randomly now and again, it'll take time to get used to it...

Don't get me started on 'live' yoghurt... all you yoghurt has live cultures... that's what makes it yoghurt, yet companies try to push their 'special' bacteria as being better than the other normal stuff...

Yeah I'm outside today. I'm working on the framework for the next greenhouse. Then probably next week I will start fitting the glass, but I am doing other things along side that so it's taking some time. It's cold, but I love working outside, and at least it's not raining today.

That's bound to happen. There is nothing wrong with that, but just try to remember all the good times you had, and not dwell on the bad times. It will take time, these things always do. But at least you have each other there to offer love and support.

Also, I think you quoted Owl on the second part when you should have quoted me.

Good day, dd. *big hug*
I was reading some studies about my (*possible) thyroid problem. There have actually been a few studies that have shown a gluten-free diet can be helpful for this problem, but there are just as many (if not more) studies that show it makes no difference at all. I agree - I think it is just a fad.

(*I want to see another doctor and get a second opinion. I simply don't trust my current doctor anymore.)

avatar
LaPtiteBete: :'-| Oh... Sorry you didn't find out yet what was going wrong... Very good thing that it's nothing serious, though. I hope you'll find a doctor who can help... and you'll trust...
Thanks for keeping us informed... I'm looking forward to further news... Take care... **Big tight Hug**
I hope I'll find a trustworthy doctor soon... The doctors in this city are really terrible... I've been through 5 in three years, because they keep failing in ways that are totally inexcusable (like forgetting to write prescriptions, forcing me to go through hellish withdrawals. That is an instant deal-breaker.)
I'll keep you informed if anything interesting happens... **Big tight return hug**

Thank you. I actually had some thyroid problems a few years ago, and was on medication for it, so I'm somewhat familiar with what I might be getting into again. I never really noticed a difference when taking the medicine, so I'm not worried if I have to do that again.

Also, hello! My best wishes to you and your partner. It will take a while, but I hope things will get better for you...

Bam. That is the whole reason right there. Walking through the grocery store, you see the exact same products next to each other, with two differences. The one on the right is twice as expensive, and has a little "Gluten-free" sticker on it. There is a massive amount of money to be made on this fad.

That's becasue you are so awesome and everyone likes to talk to you. :-)

Sadly this is everywhere now, especially with food and health related items. They use the scare tactic and emotional tactics to try to make people feel they are damaging themselves if they don't use the more expensive "healthy" brand. Many of which are no healthier, some are even worse for you. But that's capitalism for you, no ethics, just greed.
Remember Y2K? That was fun :-)
I just sat and watched all the crazy people while eating a bowl of popcorn... Even back then, I never understood how people fell for that.
avatar
AgentBirdnest: You're welcome :-)
(Yes, you may ask. I don't mind at all...) My appointment was... annoying. Nothing was figured out this week, except that I *might* have a problem with my thyroid (if I do, it is nothing serious.) Another test has been ordered for Friday to look at my gallbladder...
My doctor told me that I need to have a gluten-free diet. I heard that as "Hey! Time for you to find a new doctor!"
Still looking for answers... :-\ I'm sure it is nothing too serious, though.
** Another big hug... Just because **
I just read this right now... and I have to say that this is really interesting. When I had the talk with my doctor yesterday one of the problems he said was my thyroid. And he never ever said something about having a gluten-free diet to fix this problem.

Sorry to read you're having thyroid issues too... :-|
Did your doctor prescribe you something yet ?

Not yet. It is not on a critical level yet so he wants to wait a bit and see if it goes to normal again. It will be tested again in a few weeks. And he said it was better to fix some other things first ;-)
