adaliabooks: His name was Sherwood, we called him Woody. That's him on the couch (the tabby) with his sister Loxley (my girlfriend is a big Robin Hood fan).
You mentioned his name already, sorry I missed that temporarily.

I'm so very sorry to hear that. It's always heartbreaking to lose a member of the family. But at least you gave him a loving home and you did everything you could to make sure he had a good and happy life.

Know that feel,man. Lost my 19 year old dog 2 years ago. Been with me ever since I was a little kid.

adaliabooks: Hey everyone.. sorry for my absence today...

We've had some bad news today :(

Sherwood, our ill cat, came home last night but he wasn't very well. We were up with him for quite a lot of the night and this morning we had to take him to the vets and have him put to sleep.
We had our differences me and him.. he liked to bite me if I so much as touched me for one, and he once attacked my girlfriend so badly she had to go to A & E to get patched up, but I loved that cat.
As I've mentioned before he had cancer three years ago and had been in the clear up until the last few months were his health started to deteriorate again. In the end we're not really sure what it was, just that he had lost a lot of weight and had no appetite and was very weak. This morning my partner, our vet and I decided that putting him to sleep was the best option as he was started to suffer and showed no signs of getting better.

So it's not been the best day. My partner adored Sherwood and it's hit us both quite hard. It hasn't quite sunk in yet and we're still expecting him to come and sit beside us on the couch...

I know I've said no to hugs in the past, but today I could do with all the virtual hugs you can give :(

Sorry to bring everyone down, but I had to share. I hope everyone else has had a better day.

Thanks. Yeah, we lost our family dogs, must have been about 5 and 7 years ago, and it's brought all that back as well. It's so hard.. you never really get over it. But despite the pain of losing them it wouldn't stop me having more pets... and I thought Crow was a masochist... :)

I can understand that. I mentioned before how I lost my dog to cancer, and it pained me so much going through years of treatment and seeing the effect it had on him that I have not had the heart to get another dog since. He was a border collie and he used to work with me on the farm, so I was used to having his with me all the time. It just want the same without him.

It sounds very similar to what happened with me. We had to drive to Chester, to the University of Liverpool Leahurst campus, as that was only one of two places who could offer treatment, the other being further south, Oxford I think it was. My dog has lymphoma cancer, but it spread all over his body.

Woody had lymphoma too, in his stomach. Lucky they were just able to remove it and he was on steroids and chemotherapy tablets for a year or 18 months (well, he was on steroids till the day he died, but the chemo stopped quite a while ago). We didn't have to travel with him for it, although it was a possibility a few times.
I'm sorry you've been through this too, I wouldn't wish it on anyone...

He recovered in a few months after the operation and was healthier than he had been in years, but he kept having poorly spells and scares (things with his blood count, problems with what he could eat and the issues with his eyes) but he always bounced back... we thought he would this time too but he just kept getting worse... :'(

Thanks Endre. Yeah, I've been through it a few times myself but this time has hit the worst for some reason... probably the prolonged illness among other things...

I would say the only downside to being a pet lover :)
