akhliber: I didn't even realize dragonflies shed their skin in such a way. Very creepy! Makes sense, but I've never seen one. How strange! We've a ton of dragonflies here as well, and they are quite fascinated with the chain leash we use to take Sarge outside. Rarely is there a trip outside these days without at least one dragonfly stopping by to land on the chain for a moment to say hello. Makes me wonder just what the metal shine of the leash must look like to them.
I've always been around dragonflies but this is the first time I've seen their skin. Probably because the tufts of tall grass around the lake stood out and were convenient for them and also easy to spot the skins in. In denser foliage one would really have to search. And how cute that you get them alighting on your walks! I'm hoping mine will be out and loud soon. Should get a decent swarm of the annuals, since I live next to a park. They don't mob up like the periodics, though. And they look very different. The annuals are larger and pale green with white bellies. The periodics are black with bright red eyes. The last mob of periodics I was in was Brood X, which hatched out while I was living in the DC region.
