CarrionCrow: The magic thing's a holdover from FF 1. Same system, based on D&D I'm sure, where you only get so many shots before you're completely out.
The job thing doesn't surprise me, and neither does the no sleeping in dungeons. Square Soft wasn't so great with the whole difficulty curve thing back then. -laughs-
The magic in FF/FFIII was never supposed to be "use all your strongest stuff ALL THE TIME!" Those games wanted you to plan ahead. I think that's something modern gamers aren't really used to, since RPGs work differently now, and cRPGs always did.

Square's difficulty curve... I dunno. If you weren't dumb, you figured it out pretty quickly. I almost prefer that to the insane hand-holding some of the modern games do.

CarrionCrow: Running tally of games I now want to play more because of today's conversations - Final Fantasy 1. Final Fantasy 3. Final Fantasy 4. DOW Soulstorm. 7th Saga. (Kill me now.) -shakes head-

The original FF could definitely kill you if you didn't have a good idea of what each class would do, and a Fighter/White Mage/Black Mage/Black Mage or Fighter/White Mage/Red Mage/Black Mage mix would mean you could kiss a few dozen hours of your life goodbye coin grinding, like you said.
Remember beating the last boss in my sleep. Not meaning that figuratively. It was kinda like time jumping, and I was apparently fighting them while more asleep than awake. -laughs-
Ever try four White Mages? *eg*

Hmm. *eyes iPhone* ...no, I think I'll follow on with my DQII game for now. FFIV can wait. I've played it hundreds of times. It... Kain? Why are you eyeing me like that? Why are you threatening me with your lance? I... I...

Thought about it. Maybe when I've run out my backlog. Get back to me on that one in, say, 2 and a half, 3 years? ;)
Going to add Dragon Quest 1-4 to the list of things. Son of a....
20 years ago it was a good day with a Blockbuster rental in hand and a few days to try to wipe it out before you had to return it. Now it's the neverending feast to counter the comparative famine. It's at a point where a person literally does not have enough hours in the day to clear everything.
Oh by the way, I almost forgot.

Carrion might have his pigeon shame following him forever, but I will alway be haunted by trucker shame.

High heels are optional.

Saw that the other day. Love that guy! :)

-laughs- Could be worse. Could've bought the Shannon Tweed game. If nothing else, there's always another layer of shit between me and the bottom of the barrel.

Also, I see your lovely trucking song and raise you with one of my own. =)

Heheheh. FWIW, keep in mind that DQ 1-3 are one complete trilogy, and 4-6 are another trilogy. Not that they're the sorts of trilogies like you have nowadays where you can't play 2 without playing 1, but their stories are connected. 5 and 6 are actually some of the best... I'm crossing my fingers that they'll at least make it to iOS soon, since we have 1-4 and 8 now.

Oh, the good old days... there was a point in time where the video store in town knew me by name, and I had rented every single Nintendo game they had. It was a small town, so no Blockbuster, and I don't think they had Sega games to rent. That means that I've played everything from Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! (and beaten it) to Burger Time (and not broken a controller not beating it!) to Joust*, let alone the rare RPG-like things that were out at the time.

*Joust is probably my most-hated arcade game ever. The fact that I once rented it speaks volumes to how bored I was. The fact that I did not go to Blizzard headquarters and murder the WoW devs when I reached the Joust quest in the Cataclysm expansion speaks more to how much I've matured. I wanted to murder them.... Joust in 3D is even more evil than standard Joust... but I restrained myself. Even if the memory of that quest still makes me growl.
OK, I now own FF-IV and a legal copy of Morrowind. What a contrast that is. ;)

Woot! FFIV is still my best-beloved RPG. Have fun with Cecil's story. :)

Indeed. One is a good game from a company that's lost its way, its mind, its dignity and its common sense, and the other's supposed to be a good game from a company that currently spends its days vying for the gold medal in the International Asshole Sucking competition. =)

Aw shucks, that makes little ole me kinda proud. <blush>

I'll keep the DQ info in hand when I'm not busy screaming, laughing, crying or attempting to tear my hair out.
Thank you. =)
Ah, memories....had three video stores in town (a Blockbuster, a Hollywood and a local place that was great for finding weird crap or stuff the chain stores would censor) and they all knew me by sight if not by name. Probably spent enough money on rentals to open my own frigging store.
Also, dear gods, I feel badly for past you. Even I never tried Joust. The superior arcade version looked like it was made by alcoholics with an axe to grind against the world, and I recognized that as a kid. -laughs-
And they put something like that in WOW?
For crying out loud....I can see why you'd get knife-happy with all the old memories coming back to torture you again.
On the subject of JRPGs... I really want to play Chrono Trigger again. And Seiken Densetsu 3. God I wish they would release that game over here, I absolutely love it.

I was stupid enough to pay full price for base Skyrim. Comparatively, you've got a LOT to feel proud about. =)

Hell, they could put out an updated version of Secret of Mana to go with Seiken Densetsu 3. That'd be a very nice combo pack.
Too bad that probability is saying we'll get FF15 or FF 10-3 (just vomited in my mouth a little typing that....seriously....) before we get those things.

On the subject of Skyrim and DLC we were discussing. How incomplete would you say my gaming experience of that game would be without DragonBorn and Dawnguard?

Lol. I know they'll be shit, but I do want to try FF13 and the sequels and whatever non MMO games they release..

I never really liked Secret of Mana... I tried so many times to get into it but couldn't. I have no idea why it didn't appeal. Possibly because it lacked a job / class system (you may be seeing a pattern, I love job systems im JRPGs. That's why I loved FF Tactics Advance so much)
