tinyE: I agree. Prison Architect is a true sandbox game for example as are the ANNO games, when playing sandbox.

STALKER and Port Royal are open world games.

What I have trouble with is Terraria. It's both. It's sandbox with boss battles. I'm a little confused by this. Of course when you enter hard mode I think it ceases to be sandbox totally.

Have I put too much thought into this? :P
So, I guess pretty much any city-building (or prison-building, space station-building, etc.) game could be considered a sandbox.

That's why I stay in pre-hardmode. I like building whatever I want without any tough monsters or spreading corruption bothering me :-p I suddenly start feeling so rushed and pressured the instant I defeat Mr Flesh.

To me, "sandbox" and "open world" are two completely different things, but many people seem to use the terms interchangeably. I hear people refer to GTA or STALKER as sandbox games, and I don't like that. When I think of a sandbox, I think of being able to create, build, and destroy whatever you want. Mold the world the way you see fit (like a real life sandbox!), not just explore the world that is already there.

Sandbox means you can make anything. Open world means you can explore anywhere. I guess GTA could be considered a sandbox game to some extent since you can mod it....?

By that logic, about 97.38% of games could be called "sandbox", no?
Howsabout this distinction between the two:
Sandbox games have little point outside of creation, while in open-world games, you usually have a mission or a story or quest of some sort put in by the developers.

In a few hours I'll have my last exam... And then the second round will start.
And I already have at least 2 lined up for that one.

Also, the eye of Argon is proof that you can be so bad it's good. It's a glorious and rare example of something horrible being unintentionally hilarious.

Concerning Sandbox and Open World: wouldn't it be better to replace the term Open World with "Non-linear gameplay" for a better distinction between Sandbox (aka "be creative") and the gameplay concept of not being tied to a linear gameplay?

Not really, since there are plenty of non-open-world and non-sandbox games which can be considered non-linear to varying extents.
Just to pull an example off the top of my head: Dropsy.

You're right and now that i think of it both Sand box and open World would fit into the over-arching concept of non-linear gameplay. But still Open World is usually tied to gameplay and a narrative of some sort while the term Sand box is not really tied to a narrative. One could argue that in a sandbox game the players create their own narrative.

I had ALMOST forgotten how awesome Mount & Blade: Warband is... :P I started a new game and am just roaming around each faction, doing no quests, just fighting in the arena in each city. I made up a little rule that I have to defeat at least 20 opponents in at least one arena attempt, in each city's arena, before I can talk to that faction's leaders. I give myself three attempts, if I can't best 20 opponents at least once, then I head off to a different faction for a while.

Basically, I figure...why would a lord of a city want to talk to an absolute nobody? And why would they trust that absolute nobody to complete a task, even if it's as simple as delivering a letter? In my mind, proving yourself "above the average nameless wandering adventurer" via the arena would make you notable enough to get your foot in the proverbial door. Plus, why would people leave their village to join a complete nobody's group? etc etc

Roleplaying can be fun :P
