skeletonbow: Crap, the Steam controller is a fantastic idea. Dunno why that never occurred to me at first thought. I have not used one yet but have heard nothing but good things about them overall and they're only around $60.

That is awesome! I should buy one one of these days to mess around with it.
Again, many thanks for your help.
My daughter has an X-Box 360. Problem is getting over there as she's always working. Maybe to-night.
Thanks Skeletonbow. Really don't want to mess around with anything Steam related. Poor history dealing with them.
Since I've put a few computers together and a couple airplanes, models and full scale, I guess I are a propeller-head. LOL.
I'm really liking Hudfreegamers solution. Simple, inexpensive enough, that if it doesn't work, I can move on to something else.
Much appreciated guys.

You aren't allowed into your daughters place when she isn't there?

Where can I get a deal like that? :D

Maybe the guy will one day tell the story about how he single-handedly beat Skyrim, pun intended. Anyway, I have to admit that I have one myself. It takes some getting used too and adjusting, but it can be useful. It doesn't work for every game, though. In the case of this user, he has an issue with ISP, which can be another issue related to this controller.

I'd still look out for a used Saitek p2600 on eBay. ;)
Sometimes they are available for 1€ if one is lucky and the amount of buttons on the right side is great as well as the quality of the sticks, d-pad and the grip.

My advice with 360 controllers is to avoid the Rock Candy ones. I bought a couple of them and they don't last long.

Klumpen0815: Everything has gamepad support with QJoyPad (Linux) and Joy2Key (Windows).
You can just map keyboard or mouse commands to directions or buttons on the pad, I'm doing this all the time with old Dos games or modern games that only support XBox gamepads.
Analog looking may be the bigger problem there.
Xpadder is also really good for this.
I'm always welcome at my daughters house TinyE and vice versa. I just don't mess with her stuff when she isn't there. Mutual respect thing. She has more stuff than I do, but my stuff is more expensive. LOL
Thanks Klumpen.
I did check out the Saiteks. They seem to be going for $26 to $50 US on the used market.
The button layout is a nice feature, certainly worth considering. Amazon reviews seem to not like the D-pad very much. X-Box 360 controller also gets some low points for the D-pad.
I can make a better decision when I get over to my daughters on Friday.
The X-Box 360 controller can't be that much different than the X-Box One.

As far as the 360-pad goes, I found this:
http://www.evilcontrollers.com/controller-creator.html
So... Tried the X-Box 360 at my daughters house. Controller operated acceptably and I was able to use all pads and buttons except the left bumper. Left trigger is a bit of a reach but doable.
I felt that the X-Box 1 controller was a bit smoother, but the 360 offers better incorporation in the games I want to play with my OS and PC.
Not totally ruling out the Saitek p2600. I'll keep my eye out for a reasonable used one. Be a good back-up if not the main controller.
Thank you all for sharing your experience and your knowledge.
Your willingness to help a guy is very much appreciated.

Update:
So I got the X-Box 360 controller and purchased the X-Padder program.
Using the X-Padder tutorials I was able to set up my first profile. Redneck Rampage LOL. Controls work perfectly with the keyboard and mouse assignments.
I do find some of the inputs a bit sensitive, but that may be just a little getting used to. New creature for me.
I think that there are extensions for the sticks that can be purchased. This should increase the throw and thereby reduce sensitivity. May be worth investigating.
Once again thank you all for your help.
Its great to be able to play FPS and action games again.

Very recently had a problem with my controller. Had an old, cheap one. HAMA "Black Force". I remember that when I bought is a kid, I chose this one just by the comfortable grip and plenty of buttons. Served me well for many years. Broke it about four days ago. Well, broke the left analog stick.

Made some research about controllers. Finally considered either Logitech F710 or Xbox 360. Chose Logitech F710, as my friend has the same, seems pretty nice, a bit cheaper. I should get it in a few days.
I bought a Xbox 360 controller a few months back, only problem I find with it, is targeting.

Scartch: Just getting back to the gaming scene thanks to GOG.
The need for a controller is that I have limited use of my left hand for WASD. Industrial accident removed first two fingers. Luckily, I got to keep the thumb.
Looking at the Logitech F310 Gamepad as apparently it can be used for older (Xinput) games and also current titles (Directinput).
I have absolutely no experience with a game controller as I always used the mouse/ keyboard combo exclusively.
So, your advice will be very important before deciding and making a purchase.
Games I've played and enjoyed in the past:
System Shock2
Most of the Quake titles
Unreal Titles.
Thanks
Scartch...
I know this is after the fact and this isn't the advice you were asking for, but is left handed mousing at all a possibility? When I was a teen I made the conscience decision to use a mouse left handed purely to get away from WASD which I find a ridiculous way to try and play a game to this day.

I've always used the number pad. 4,5,6, and 8 for directions. FPS's that support turning or leaning can make use of 7 and 9. Special cases on 1 and 3, and 2 a game dependent interaction key for things like opening doors or what have you. Insert/0 for jump, and Enter often makes a good crouch. /*-+ are useful for things you need simi-frequent access to.

To me it was always a lot more comfortable to use directions with keys that aren't misaligned, and this way my left hand is always the motion hand and my right hand is always the action hand regardless if I am using a game pad or the keyboard. The big down side is getting used to it if you are right handed(maybe harder in your case depending on the exact injury) and that the NUM pad support for games can be flaky (especially for older titles and under Linux for some reason.)

Smannesman: The Logitechs are fine, but you'd probably also be able to use a 360 controller with some remapping software.
Since you can then map the controller to keyboard presses and mouse movements, it should work for most games.
I rarely use a controller though, so it's entirely possible I'm wrong.
XBCD serves my needs for that. You can even swap the Left Analog for the D-Pad and vice-versa (required for allowing use of the D-Pad in some games, as, by default, the Left Analog is considered the X-Y axis) :
