zeffyr: Because it's called different and the series evolved. Please have a look at
this news.
Geralt_of_Rivia: Again, what is written there supports my view. Let me quote from the news article you linked:
"Codemasters leaves TOCA name in the dust with new racing installment"
"Race Driver One will also take players through tracks and circuits in Europe, the US, and Japan."
"Race Driver One will create a world that goes far beyond the traditional boundaries of motorsport gaming, taking players from the most prestigious race circuits to road and street events around the globe. A completely fresh career structure will engage players in an unprecedented range of racing styles as they build a team capable of becoming number one."
Geralt_of_Rivia: That sounds like "We are not calling it TOCA any more because it doesn't have much in common with TOCA any more.". Please read up on what the
TOCA actually is. It is not a brand name that what invented by Codemasters. It is a British motorsport organization that has nothing to do with street racing or Japanese circuits.
That's why the name change was necessary and wasn't just cosmetic and that's why you also can't consider them to be the same series.
It was named TOCA long after it evolved from it's origins.
Have you played TOCA Race Driver 3? I have. It was an awesome entry in the series and it was concentrated about different racing series, like DTM, GT and V8 supercars - not only TOCA-like racing.
The name 'TOCA' stayed with the game because the recognition of the brand name, even after the series evolved. Just like 'Colin McRae' series - it evolved into 'DIRT' series, but it hasn't lost 'Colin McRae Rally' prefix until DIRT 3. It's still the same series - the same developing company, just evolution of a product despite the name change.
'Codemasters leaves TOCA
name in the dust with new racing
installment' - leaves only the name, not the series. And the word 'installment' underlines that the game (Grid) is a direct continuation of the series.
There are more articles (

3) that support my statement. I still see none that would support yours, that's a 'completely differrent series'.
