I don't know any source that would confirm your reasoning. GRID and other games mentioned before are continuations of original TOCA games. The Grid itself is a sequel to TOCA Race Driver 3.

Let me ask you a question: If EA would stop paying for the FIFA licence and make a generic soccer game with generic teams and players that have no resemblence to real world teams and players instead, would you consider this game to be part of the FIFA soccer series?

The answer to this rethoric question is: Of course not!

It's the same thing here. The TOCA is an actual motorsport organization. If Codemasters had continued to pay them for the licence they would have continued to call the games TOCA. Since they didn't call them TOCA any more you can safely assume they don't pay the licence any more and have to make changes to the game to not make it look like TOCA too much.

So at best you could call the GRID series a spiritual successor to the TOCA series. But that still doesn't make it the same series. Or you would have to mix many series by that logic (System Shock and Bioshock for example).

If you have a look at Mobygames they also consider the series separate: TOCA on Mobygames, GRID on Mobygames.

I still don't see any source that would confirm your point of view. Codemasters itself states that these games are connected:
'GRID Autosport, the next game in the GRID series and descendant of TOCA Touring Cars.'

Just because a sequel to Fast Food Tycoon changed name to Pizza Connection 2, it doesn't mean that's completely different series as you say.

That depends on how you read that sentence. To me it sounds like they support my point of view.

1) They speak of a GRID series. If they consider the GRID games to be part of the TOCA series they would have written "... the next game in the TOCA series...".

2) "...descendant of ..." can in this context only be read as "related to but not part of". If the game were part of the TOCA series the whole sentence would make little sense. Why speak of a GRID series and call it a descendant in the first place if all games are part of the same series?

Please read up on what the TOCA actually is. It is not a brand name that what invented by Codemasters. It is a British motorsport organization that has nothing to do with street racing or Japanese circuits.

That's why the name change was necessary and wasn't just cosmetic and that's why you also can't consider them to be the same series.

It was named TOCA long after it evolved from it's origins.

Have you played TOCA Race Driver 3? I have. It was an awesome entry in the series and it was concentrated about different racing series, like DTM, GT and V8 supercars - not only TOCA-like racing.

The name 'TOCA' stayed with the game because the recognition of the brand name, even after the series evolved. Just like 'Colin McRae' series - it evolved into 'DIRT' series, but it hasn't lost 'Colin McRae Rally' prefix until DIRT 3. It's still the same series - the same developing company, just evolution of a product despite the name change.

'Codemasters leaves TOCA name in the dust with new racing installment' - leaves only the name, not the series. And the word 'installment' underlines that the game (Grid) is a direct continuation of the series.

With the recent release of Pizza Tycoon and Pizza Tycoon 2 (aka Fast Food Tycoon 2), GOG is now missing the in-between game, <span class="bold">Pizza Syndicate</span> (aka Fast Food Tycoon).
Fast Food Tycoon 2 is just an alternative name for Pizza Tycoon 2.
