Shadowcat: Okay GOG, this is completely
ridiculous.
I know from past experience that there is no way to
edit a review once it has been posted -- the original accepted submission is permanent -- so let me assure you that the error message indicating that the review I've submitted is "too long" and that I might like to make it "shorter", with
no indication of how much shorter it needs to be is nothing short of infuriating.
I just spent about a half hour gradually editing a review down in an attempt to appease this mystery limitation, and all I could do each time was find some text to trim or reword, try submitting it, find some more text to trim or reword, try submitting that, over and over and over and over again. You can't post something short to establish the limit and then work to that, because as soon as a version is accepted you can't change it, so each and every attempted submission needs to be edited into a coherent review, even if it's a completely wasted effort.
My final review is considerably less useful than the original one, and the whole experience was incredibly frustrating, so I don't believe I shall ever write another review here again unless I hear that (a) you have increased the character limit, (b) you actually tell the user what the limit is and how far over it they are, and (c) you allow at least some short-term editing of reviews, so that simple typos and errors can be corrected.
As it stands, this feature of the site is absolutely horrible.
GOG needs to remove these limits or at least show how many characters you have left to type in
