Reviews are even more than that. You're trying to find out if the reviewer speaks your voice, you're trying to find out if his or her passions are your own, and THEN you know whether you like the game or not. In some cases, eleven tweets are sufficient for that. In most cases, they're not. :(

Yeah, no one even votes there any more. Seems like there are more pressing things like international pricing and shit. :( :(

Just tried to post a Broken Age review. Can't get it under 1750. Seriously, that site overhaul better give us more options. Including, by the way, personal review overview/edit options.
This topic seriously needs a serious bump!

The 1500 characters limit is a joke. If "less is more" you have to do more with less and that is unreasonably hard for a balanced and insightful review. Please don't make it unnecessarily hard on us, GOG.

If you're NOT an analphabet, please vote for the Increase character limit on reviews community wishlist:

147 votes so far, needs more. Any GOG staff input on this yet?

EDIT: I found this post by G-Doc but I didn't see a reason given for the change they put in place:

Make that 149.

I'm not one to write long reviews but I'd read them.

Here's a "protest idea" I got from a give away thread that was going on just now:

If GOG does not increase the 1500 character limit, let's all start writing reviews in minimalist haiku form.

For those who don't know what a haiku is, let me make an example of how to "review" e.g. Crusader No Remorse:

"Bitter betrayal
Silent crimson vengeance
melting skin"

Should be fine for a review. I mean, you can always post a longer review in the forum, right....?

G.O.G. reviews,
Once a useful site resource,
Are now all too short.
158.

While I don't have the time to write lengthy reviews (though I'd like to - for the games that really impressed me) I really like reading long reviews that go into detail why or why not this game could be for me.
Same here...

I've spent all my afternoon (I'm not an English native speaker) writing an in-depth review for Expedition: Conquistador, because I truly liked the game and I think it deserves it, only to find out that is not accepted on the account of its length (~3200 characters). After hours of hacking and slashing through my text, all that I am left with is something that if not entirely useless, for sure it's less convincing and meaningful than it was. Maybe it is my fault and I don't know how to keep it short, but a game has so many aspects and I simply can't say only "graphics good, combat bad, music shines" when I review something.
If all I've wanted to say would've been "Great game, thanks", I probably wouldn't have bothered!
Bad GOG, bad!!!
I'll add my voice to this idiocy. It isn't as if text is a horrible storage burden to GOG: their game collection must be hundreds of gigabytes! What's the deal with the MAYBE megabytes of text stored?

If people want to read reviews, the more information they get, the better. Shorter reviews are much less helpful and informative than longer ones: typically from people who actually care about the game they're writing about one way or another. It's maddening not even having a simple character-count and limit note. It's like GOG is trying to actively discourage community, participation and feedback. W. T. F.
Confirmed: the maximum character count for reviews is 1,500

I wrote a detailed review of Gone Home (694 words, 3,976 characters), but was unable to post it because GOG apparently does not want detailed reviews any more. (This policy appears to have been different at sone point in the past.) So I repeatedly cut and re-submitted it until it was accepted, at 1,499 characters.

Now I guess I'll go post my real review on the forums. And I finally understand all those comments I've read before about "I wanted to post a real review but couldn't..."

GOG: I know many people don't want to read long reviews, but there must be a better solution to this problem. And even for brief reviews 1,500 characters is way too short - how about at least 3,000 characters? Or better yet, how about a way to link a short review to a corresponding longer form post with the full version?
I think they actually relaxed it a bit. I recently wrote a review and I found it to be a little easier than my previous time doing it. I agree though, the limits should be removed. Valve doesn't character limit theirs, and most people over there just throw up one-liners anyway.

GoblinFX: I hear you. I just spent an hour working on a review for FTL. No warning it was getting too long. I was actually trying to keep it as short as I could, and then all of a sudden, the site tells me it's too long. Really sucky way to do it GOG.

Edit:
I just looked at my review. It's about 3/4 page typed and it's just over 2,600 characters with spaces. So, what GOG is saying is that a ONE PAGE review is too long. If this is the case, what's the point of even reviewing. I agree with other posters. You can't get a good idea of whether you want to play a game or not with nothing but super short comments. I can't really call them reviews with such a short character limit. With the average small thumb drive being 4GB, there's no excuse for this limit.

What really galls me, is the most helpful review for FTL is 3,430 characters long. That's more than double the current limit.
this is the real problem though. if you just had some way to know what you were doing with the limit then you could write your review and they could have the small reviews.

We now have a character counter in the review entry box, and it shows that the limit has been increased to...

drumroll

...2000.
So, the staff are listening, just not getting the extent of the problem...

Seriously, it would be really nice for whoever decides this to come and explain the decision. This has been a problem for a long time, and it's COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS! I feel that point has to be made continuously because it really is that ridiculous. Think about it, this is a site for people who like quality games, long reviews are a major way to determine the quality of a game, and long reviews are forbidden. It's such a fundamental flaw of the site that I find myself flabbergasted every time I find out this still hasn't been fixed...
