Which do you like most... and if you feel so inclined... why?
Both, sorry i might come back and add a reason later but my head is processing too much stuff currently to be able to explain in detail, it is after all a difficult task.

I am however looking forward to the new Desperados games and maybe it puts the series on top then but who knows.

I only played the 1st desperados game and I didn't play Commandos 3.

From what I remember, I preferred the Commandos series because it was a bit more stealth-oriented. Desperados 1 was also a very good game, but it focused less on stealth kills and more on hit & run gunfight tactics.
I think Desperados (at least the first one, which i remember playing) is a better game, but i would choose Commandos because of the WW2 setting.

People say Shadow Tactics is great as well, but i never played it.
I only gave Desperados a spin but did not enjoy it as much as Commandos (which I played the first one until around mission 6 I believe, and the Beyond Call of Duty until the 4th one I think... never finished those and never played the 2nd and 3rd one). I hate stealth though, but that sweet WW2 setting and the commandos "personalities" just sold me on that one.
I liked Desperados more, but found both to be unfinishable. I did not like the frantic moose-clicking needed to get your guys to do what you wanted.

With limited experience across the series, I would tend to agree. It seems that Desperados (Helldorado) would go on to add more action elements as the series continued.

Minime developing Desperados III definitely gets my attention.

Yes, most definitely interested!

I would have added Chicago 1930 and Robin Hood Legend of Sherwood into the discussion, but stopped short because they didn't become series. Still, feel free to add them to the discussion should you have played them and want to talk about them vs Desperados or Commandos.

Definitely Commandos. The first Commandos and its addon are among my favourite games of all time. I didn't like 2 and 3 as much, imo they're too dumbed down and lost much of the challenge, though they're still decent.

I've played the first few missions of Desperados 1 (tried two or three times actually) and just couldn't get into it, gameplay just felt clunky and uninspired to me. I can't quite say why, but it felt like a cheap copy of the Commandos games.

So far I've only played Desperados 3 demo. It was kinda cool. I think I own Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines on Steam though, so I think I'll try them in near future.

I admit, I've never played any of these; still, I somehow didn't think "frantic moose-clicking" would be a gameplay element. But they say you learn something new every day... =P

In case you weren't aware, there is a demo.

Definitely Commandos 1 (Behind Enemy Lines). It is indeed hard, but the sense of accomplishment when you get all your team in the right place at the right time is immense. Desperados is good (as is Commandos 2). I didn't like Commandos 3 at all (another victim of trying to force 2D games into the 3D era before figuring out how to do it properly, or even realising that not all games needed it to start with). Shadow Tactics - Blades of the Shogun is great. Crookz The Big Heist doesn't quite have the same gameplay but is often overlooked for a lighter weight crime version with a funky 70s soundtrack. :-)

Hahaha. So much moose clicking! They don't like it either. A few to many clicks and they'll smack you with their horns!
At first I thought its easy to compare these two series, because both of them execute the same gameplay mechanics. But then, after I realized that now Commandos and Desperados series took their own way to progress, it's hard to say what is better in my opinion. Seeing that there's going to be a Commandos 2 remaster, if I recall correctly, I would say I like it more .

I know, but i'm avoiding starting playing new games before my current backlog goes down a little bit.
Commandos 2 - HD Remaster will be released on 24 January 2020.
