I only have Origin installed for Command and Conquer and Titanfall. Now I'm starting to wonder why I still have that thing on my computer.

Plokite_Wolf: Is this a joke?

Darvond: Did you read the descriptor I used? It's the same sort of wording used for the Nutrimatic giving a substance that isn't tea.
Unless I am thoroughly mistaken, it was almost -but not quite- entirely unlike the intended quote though. :-P

Oh, you're quite correct. I can't be bothered to fix it, however.
I think the real problem right now is that unless your name is Blizzard, its not possible to make the big bucks with a proper RTS title of the sort people like me (who have been playing the C&C games since day one and still play the older
titles on a regular basis) actually want to play. Trying to clone Starcraft hasn't made money for the people who tried it so now EA is trying to clone Clash of Clans in the hope that might make the big bucks,

Is anyone other than Blizzard making any meaningful amount of money with the RTS genere right now?

It's possible, it's just that nobody wants to.

Relic looked up to MOBAs for Dawn of War III, Blizzard is just soaking up money elsewhere (Overwatch and still millions of WoW subscriptions), Petroglyph are populated by imbeciles at this point, and EA dispersed their last RTS-capable studio 5 years ago. Indies, on the other hand, are more interested in RPGs and making the same platformers over and over again.

Most new RTS games are guilty of
a. No base building, while building and destroying bases is fun and adds strategic depth to the game.
b. control point nonsense, which often feels meaningless and forces you to constantly clash your units on set points on the map, restricting how you can play.
c. Small scale / tactical combat, so no large armies clashing.

While the majority of people prefer a laid back playstyle. Sit back, turtle in a big base, amass a large army and roll over the enemy. Preferably in a comp-stomp setting.

New RTS devs constantly try to make a game around competitive multiplayer and watchability, while forgetting that most competitive games didn't start out as competitive games. The only real exception is Petroglyph, who makes games that lack any form of tactical depth.

But if you look at the games people love, they certainly don't follow the same formula as what the devs are making:
Starcraft 2, Age of Empires, Warcraft 3, Command and Conquer (Red Alert, Generals, CNC), Supreme Commander.

The only exception to the rule seem to be historical RTS games (such as Company of Heroes and Wargame: Red Dragon). Where it's accepted due to the setting. So you need a compelling reason that fits the lore why you deviate from the norm.

So now all RTS gamers seem to flock towards genres that resemble those RTS games, such as Total Warhammer and They are Billions. That still allow you to kill lots of things and play in a laid back manner.

I'd argue that what you just describe isn't RTS at all.

The compstomp mentality and multiplayer viability aren't mutually exclusive. WarCraft and Command & Conquer are particular examples of that.

I agree. And I didn't mean it as black and white as I said it, as I also enjoy playing online against other players.

I'm just saying that a lot of modern RTS games look like they are trying to fill some management checklist that doesn't match what people actually play.
It is really sad RTSes are viewed as not profitable or optimal by most companies. The last good one was Tiberium Wars and RA3 was still manageable (although you can already see the decline there). Since then, I haven't played an RTS that was fun to play or had any interest in. They failed to recreate what made Dawn of War 1 so awesome and every single game catering to E-sports and competitiveness is starting to get on my nerves....

On topic, it was obvious since Twilight that EA doesn't care about C&C. Yet another franchise completely butchered by EA.

The last hope for RTS gaming seems to be the Age of Empires IV. Hopefully, they do it right. If even Microsoft fails, then I'm afraid that there is no hope.

We need an RTS with a capable AI, good, lengthy campaign and no multiplayer focused BS.

I really hope Iron Harvest turns out to be a decent RTS title. I think it has got really good potential.

It's in Relic's hands. And they aren't really on a success spree lately.

Remove the "we" on your statement about multiplayer, though. Multiplayer is one of the factors that keeps a game long-standing.

Those are some pretty epic costumes.

Shadowstalker16: At least its a mobile game. That's still proof that someone at EA knows what an RTS is (or at least isn't).
Yes they know what is this ! BTW you remember me we played on this clash royale servers many hours hah?

A necro, by a brand new account, about something that happened 2 or more years previously, over a period of just "many hours"... What drugs are you on, to maintain this superhuman memory? I want some of that!!! I noticed that recently, my memory is starting to fail spectacularly.

It was just a bot, promoting some Clash Royal server.
