A question for those who are better informed than me :

Is this free Prologue a sort of extra level, introducing the game mechanics and universe (like the Alder Blood prologue)? Or is it just a regular Demo, which will be part of the full game when it's released?

I ask this because, all those years ago, I wasn't already much fond of game demos (because when I later played the full game I'd have to replay the same scenario/level again).

Thanks in advance.

Finally an interesting game

When they use the word "prologue", that is exactly what they are conveying.

Sometimes a demo labelled as "demo" is actually a prologue as well (like the demo for Starcraft).

Thank you. That's what I wanted to know.

But there are other free games on GOG which are labeled "prologues". Yet, when you read the game card they explicitly state that they're "Alpha Demos" of the final game. Hence my confusion regarding the issue.
I quite enjoyed playing the Alder Blood trial, but I have no interest in playing an unfinished section of a game.

Thanks again, Carradice.

You are welcome! Both claims can be simultaneously valid: Storywise, the demo can be a prologue (instead of showing a portion of the final game). Yet it will be made with the engine and assets of the game at an Alpha level of quality.

So, there might be later improvements in the final game, For example in the optimization, in the interface, in the gameplay, or in the visuals or audio.

Carradice: Lately, I am appreciating turn-based games more and more. Although active pause is a viable option. But I like thinking about the tactical options. Real time often makes you react more than anything else.

gog2002x: While I really like good RPGs w/ the pause feature, turn-based are some of my favorite types.

I enjoyed the Baldur's Gate series, but had to micro manage the combat a lot more. On the other hand in the Fallout series I didn't have to worry about that aspect so was able to relax alot more during combat, unlike BG series where your enemy could move out of AOE range or your own party could end caught in it lol.

But to be clear, I loved both series for their own styles and had so much fun playing and replaying them. They will always have a special place in my gaming heart.
Just out of curiosity: Did you try Temple of Elemental Evil?

As a matter of fact I think played the retail version, though tbh I don't recall if I finished it. If memory serves, there were some game bugs that I couldn't overcome.

The GOG version is still in my game library and I haven't touched it yet, but It is tagged as a favorite. So I must have enjoed it even if I didn't finished it.

Now you got me itching to try it again lol. (After I get done with the half dozen that are already in progress...)

Just imagine if Baldur's Gate with the combat system of Temple of Elemental Evil. Combat that is more meaningful, actually knowing what is happening. Better for fighting bosses. Maybe less appealing for fighting the zillion trash mobs in BG.

Let's hope future RPG games learn to incorporate the best designs that we all love, while leaving out the worst.
Just in case you missed it and would be interested in it: The game is on Kickstarter right now.

What's the difference between these... aren't they technically both demos?

(I'm asking as a totally serious question with 0% snark. It can be hard to tell online.)
Oh, Linux support. I was going to wishlist, until I saw that it had a custom EULA.

Oh, a custom EULA. I was going to have a laugh at whatever mention of DRM was in there, until I saw section 4.6.

4.6. To the extent the foregoing provisions do not transfer any ownership interest in or to the Fan Content, you expressly grant Anshar all ...
To the extent that they do not transfer ownership? That's near OGL 1.1 levels of entitlement, possibly worse when you realise their definition of Fan Content looks a bit viral, and IIUC, 10.2.a.a.3 is granting them indemnity for any other author's IP that gets pulled in by a viral definition of Fan Content.

The license is written by the publisher, I dread to think what the license between publisher and developer must look like.

Anshar Studios: in case it's not obvious, this review is not Fan Content, despite 4.1.c's attempt to claim rights to reviews.

I'd bet it's the same thing with two different product pages, but I haven't checked it...
