Hot spot indicator? What sorcery is this?!

Simon the Sorcerer & Simon the Sorcerer 2: 25th Anniversary Edition are coming soon, DRM-free to GOG.com.
He can be arrogant. He can be obnoxious. He can drive your favorite fairytale characters nuts. If that wasn't enough, he's now also enhanced for his 25th Anniversary! Sporting a modernized control scheme, upscaled visuals, new animations and the option to mix and match all the cool new features with those of the original versions, Simon is back and ready to point & click his way into infamy once more.

The Anniversary editions will be released on April 3rd. The original versions will be removed from sale and added to these as a bonus goodie.
Each Anniversary Edition will cost 8.99 USD.
Owners of the original games will get a 50% discount on them.
Getting both Anniversary editions will grant you a 10% bundle discount.

Alexim: What is the difference if the original will be a bonus goodie of the remaster?
The remaster will come with a price hike. To be fair, not a massive one (not as bad as Beamdog's upcoming bastardization of Neverwinter Nights) but one nonetheless, for what (to me) looks like a zero effort project.

Ah yes, I was also wondering if the current bonuses of the originals will be lost forever, like the HD wallpapers, or if the originals will keep their separate card with the related bonuses like other games where you get more games with a single purchase (for example, if I buy Dracula Trilogy, I will have 3 different games in my library).

MarkoH01: Funny. I watched the trailer and I was actually waiting for the HD version to be shown at all. Then I realized that this WAS the HD version. Really disappointed and probably won't buy. I own the first three originals on CD. It would have been interested to see Simon 3D be remade in 2D though.
There was a fan made demo of Simon 3 in 2D, but it's not downloadable anymore. Looking for it I have found out that Simon the Sorcerer 3 was almost comleted in 2D, but they threw everything away. Funny, right?

HypersomniacLive: Peeps who haven't gotten it yet, should add the game to their libraries before it gets tucked away in a remastered edition as a free bonus.
Yuck! That game is beautifully handcrafted pixel by pixel. Why botch it that way? Plus, it's a free game, I have played it on Android with ScummVM and it works fine. There's no reason to buy it. I agree, take all the free games. Dragonsphere did not stay free for ever, for example.

Of course GOG is a shop, and must sell what sells. But
1 they are gatekeeping many good games and then we have this blatantly poor quality remake here
2 this is a niche game anyway, and its niche fans don't seem generally happy of the remaster

Maybe it is part of a deal for more Adventuresoft stuff coming here, like the 2005 Call of Chtulu game? Or hardly the Elvira games?

The respectable and serious thing to do would have been to patch for free the original Simon the Sorcerer so that it could be played with subs and dub.

Don't know if you're aware of this, but some time last year Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth was in fact available on GOG for all of a week until it was quietly removed for reasons I'm unsure of. (This was in the middle of a sale too, so few probably noticed it coming and going).

The Elvira games look interesting. I'd buy them if they were on here - but I'm guessing that Adventuresoft doesn't have the rights to her likeness anymore - hence why we have Personal Nightmare and Waxworks, but not them.

Sad news, two more good old games get buried under "remastered" versions.

eiii: Sad news, two more good old games get buried under "remastered" versions.
I hear you. This is a modern trend I despise almost as much as MTs and lootboxes - taking a nice old PC game that still works and plays great on modern systems, while still costing only peanuts - then doing a half-assed "remaster" - just so you have an excuse to jack the price up and perhaps (in worst case scenarios) unbundle expansions/DLC/bonus content and (if you're Activision) add in MTs.

Ultimately, it seems to be about trying to nickle and dime those who actively avoid modern game releases. Why do you think Hasbro seems to be having Beamdog go through their entire back catalog of D&D games now? Because they could be making twice as much money!

pbaggers: If their real intention is to get me to buy the original Simon 2 at full-price before it's taken off the store, then mission accomplished.

Alexim: What is the difference if the original will be a bonus goodie of the remaster?
When you buy the original version of the game your money goes to the original version only. When you buy the remastered version (with the original version as a goodie) you support the remastered version with your money. The more money companies make with remastered versions the more companies will join the remaster business instead of creating new games. So better spend your money on things you want to support.

LOL that's great!
Never played the original games. I guess I'll pick it up on release since the anniversary edition will have the original games.

To be honest, I was not familiar with these games until now.
After reading all of these posts, I had to see what all of you were fussing about with regard to the graphics.

So I went to each of the game's respective store pages and began comparing screen shots between the old and new versions.

And after doing so, I can say without reservation that the old versions are better by a huge magnitude. FAR better. If you are like me, and have no experience with these games, but are currently interested in them because of all the talk about the new versions, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you take two minutes and compare screen shots. And then grab the originals while you still can and save yourself a few bucks. Not to mention you also won't be having a couple of useless versions cluttering up your game shelf.

LootSeeker: Never played the original games. I guess I'll pick it up on release since the anniversary edition will have the original games.
Do the math:
If you buy the originals now:
$5.99 + $5.99 = $11.98

If you buy the remasters later in order to play the originals, which will be included:
$8.99 + $8.99 = $17.98

Buying now will save you $6.00.

Unless you really want those remasters. True, a couple of other features were added, but if you compare screen shots to the originals, there is simply no way I could play something that looks like that, especially when I know how good the originals look in comparison.

Each to his own, however. Maybe I'm missing something.

GOG.com: [...] The original versions will be removed from sale and added to these as a bonus goodie. [...]
It's almost as if no lessons were learned when you removed Planescape: Torment, so customers had to buy the more expensive Enhanced Edition in order to get their hands on the original. Keeping the original as a goodie is a nice gesture of course, but $#*%&! MojoTouch for taking away our option to just purchase the original outright. If they want to ensure a sale, they should have put more effort into the re-release in the first place. Now people are just more likely to consider other sources - which nobody wants.
While I fully blame MojoTouch for making the actual decision I blame GOG for not stressing enough to them how this kind of behavior does poison the well. If only sending a packet of life scorpions to MojoTouch wasn't so much effort...*

I've taken the freedom to add the gamecards for the "Legacy" versions to archive.org so the community reviews aren't lost to posterity:
https://web.archive.org/web/20180321022434/www.gog.com/game/simon_the_sorcerer_legacy
https://web.archive.org/web/20180321022558/www.gog.com/game/simon_the_sorcerer_2_legacy
(I'm mentioning this here because readers from the future have little chance of figuring out what the urls were changed to on their own.)

Resolving the issue of either voice acting or subtitles, but not both is a good thing, but should have been addressed in a simple update/patch, imo.
I'd also like to point out that the original games officially support Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10) as well as Mac OS X (10.6.8) while the 25th Anniversary Editions only support Windows 7, 8 and 10. So this looks like another downgrade of an already unappealing offer.
I would do a snarky remark about "Good Old Games" here, but GOG are already aware that this is no longer what the "GOG" stands for.

Pond86: [...] I'd much rather we got Simon 4 back and had 5 & 6 added here tbh.
Development on Simon the Sorcerer 6 - Between Worlds has been "halted indefinitely due to unforeseen events"... I'm sorry.

But since were already on the topic: Do GOG have any official statement for us concerning

Simon the Sorcerer 4 Chaos Happens (Which was actually already on GOG - and then was removed again.)
or Simon the Sorcerer 5: Who'd Even Want Contact?! ?

While those are barely the best games ever there's always interest from players in finishing a series. After all, GOG gave Syberia 3 a chance, so why not locate the rights holder for these two games?

And finally, some words for GOG's communication officers: I happen to have Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2 on my wishlist. The only reason I know that they are going to be removed (as an unbundled option) is because I read this seemingly barely related announcement by chance. ("Unrelated" because who needs a re-release, really...?) It is still time to properly communicate this to potential customers... This time you have the time to act...

* I feel like that would be a great business idea. "Involuntary scorpion adoption services. Buy one today, get 37 more for free."

[Edit:]
Had to manually doctor some links, because "Why should our forum work without workarounds?" The GOG forums are the pits! Dear GOG: Just switch to Discourse, please.

Will I still be able to download the old version I old or do I now need a hard copy?

They really should, an underrated gem and very funny at times.

The old versions have been renamed to:
simon_the_sorcerer_legacy
simon_the_sorcerer_2_legacy

If you have had those two games, they will still in your library after the 25th anniversary edition released.
