GOG.com: Coming soon: ROGUE-FP
I like the 10th screenshot. That one reminds me of "Temple of Apshai", etc., which I loved playing as a kid.
But the rest...not so much.

How about finally adding the original to the catalogue?

Basically I see it as the original but with additional First person mode. Apparently you can switch to classic ascii mode and play the game like in 1980

Anyways the original DOS Epyx version is available on Steam if I am not wrong. So I would be a nice addition here, indeed.
Nerd factor 11/10. Normally, I'm not a fan of ostentatious retro (just re-release the original instead), but this has got some really enchanting aesthetics to it. Wishlisted, and if my perception is the same in a week or two, to be bought.

Looks like Matrix code that went... rogue.

Rule #17. Perception inclines with N, where N = now() - salary.last.date(). Exact function undocumented.

C&P'D FROM MY STEAM POST:

I really, really, REALLY want this game, save for one thing standing in my way...

This has ALL the boxes that I require in a must-have game that are ticked, save for perma-death, as it's the one gameplay mechanic that I despise.

Unlike most people with the gambler's itch, I DESPISE wasted effort… As putting in your best effort for nothing is infuriating for those who aren't into gambling, as that is essentially what this gameplay mechanic is custom-made for.

Sure, it's a great adrenaline rush if you're in your twenties, there is no denying that, hence its popularity. But if you're in your 40s onwards, you don't have time to be wasting in a game where you have to begin all over again thousands of times due to an unforeseen death trap, or it's like!

That's the thing about this mechanic, as it's a gameplay mechanic with constant repetition for those with a gambler's itch, it's how and why it's so popular. So for those who do not have the gambler's itch, it's a complete waste of time…

Had this game included perma-death as a separate mode for those with the gambler's itch, I would snag this game right now **if it was available…

It's frustratingly dismaying, as this game is everything that I crave!

Looking forward to this.....but I do prefer the original "smiley face" ASCII character rather than the "@".
I normally don't like FP roguelike/roguelite games. But this one really looks interesting. I think I will pick it up when it arrives here.

The ASCII character set doesn't include any smiley faces. "@" is the original.

Actually, I meant the Epyx version (not the original,my mistake)...the "IBM smiley"....The one used in "Snipes"

That's a good idea!
If anyone is wondering, the CLASSIC MODE in ROGUE-FP is a rogue-clone based off of version 5.4.4 of Rogue. The source code for it can be easily found on github if you're curious about its inner workings. When it comes to features I have only made one change and that is that I have removed the bow and I'll tell you why. Arrows are still in and function as they are supposed to, same with the other ranged weapons, but I have scoured every line of code in the source that's up on git and I have found no code that actually makes the bow do anything. It only actual function is as a very weak melee weapon. You don't need it equipped to fire arrows and arrows don't get any kind of boost if you have it equipped when you fire them. They also don't get any kind of bonus if the bow in enchanted. Honestly, the only reason I can think of for the bow being in the game is that it's there to confuse the rest of the lads in the computer lab in 1980. I think it's only there just to make players THINK that it does something. Now that's perfectly fine when you release a game for your friends but when a game is open to the general public, well, that's just not a question I want to answer over and over, or be forced to answer right up front and therefore remove the mystery. Other than that though there should be feature parity. Though some of you may have keener eyes than me so if you spot anything that doesn't seem right please let me know!

The STANDARD MODE(when you click Dig Dungeon on the main menu) however is a roguelike with the above only as its backbone. I have overhauled the floor generation, added new monsters, added new items, added new traps, added new abilities, etc. This mode is inspired by Brogue which is another great roguelike though it is just an inspiration and I'm not trying to match any of its mechanics exactly. And this mode continues to evolve as I have much more planned for it! Even now at version 3.0 I still have a lot I would like to add. So if you decide to buy ROGUE-FP then please look forward to future updates!

These games are all about the wasted effort, unfortunately :(. Looking at it in the best possible way this provides a sense of excitement and risk since you can loose a lot of time if you mess up. It isn't (or doesn't have to be) just gambling, at least in Moria, the first "roguelike" and the first one I played, since you can be more careful and avoid trouble (the free CRPG Book says that Rogue itself didn't have the same degree of complexity and it wasn't as easy to get yourself killed, so if this one matches Rogue closely enough, which it sounds like it does, it might not be too bad). Though I also suspect more people who play those games treat it like gambling than learning the system (I played Moria quite a bit but never got all that good at it, though I eventually got somewhat better at Tales of Maj'Eyal). For me, they do tend to fall in the "more addicting than fun" category that I like to avoid.

Anyone who wants to try Rogue might consider installing NetBSD in a VM or SD card (minimal install without graphics should still be under 500MB I think with the lastest 10.0 release). The games set includes Rogue, NetHack, Collosal Cave Adventure, and some other early games like a clone of a very early Star Trek game first released in 1971. And, of course, tetris. The package system has both Moria and Angband, which was based on Moria and has both old style ascii mode and a minimalist graphical system (and continues to be developed and has Windows and Mac downloads as well as being in most open source package systems).

Thanks for showing up in the forums :). You can get special gold text if you let GOG know about your account. If SteamDB is correct it sounds like you are using Godot engine for your first person part?
