Be careful. If you try one and find you like it, there are literally hundreds of hours of really well developed worlds to lose yourself in :)

I started with Exile 3, and 20 years late I am an addict of Geneforge, Avernum, and Avadon.

I adore Spiderweb Software and it's exciting to see another sequel landing here.

Or, you could try the demos of some of the games; they're available on Spiderweb Software's website.

(Expect to see intelligent spiders, whether hostile spellcasters or friendly talkative spiders, in some of these games.)

What order would people suggest Spiderweb games be played in?

Last one first, first one last, of course.
How else would you play any games, or watch any movies, if not in that order?

At the moment, I'd say Geneforge 1: Mutagen is probably the best and most welcoming option for new players. It's an excellent game with unique mechanics, very solid writing, and an original science-fantasy setting.

Queen's Wish 1: The Conqueror and Avernum 1: Escape from the Pit are also solid options, being sprawling open-world RPGs in more-conventional high fantasy settings.

Love me some dramatic music to potato graphics. ;) Kidding aside, I do own most of his games even if I haven't played them all. Still haven't gotten around to the first QW. Despite the fact that Jeff Vogel has been churning them out about once a year or so for decades? Big surprise indeed. =P For a newcomer I definitely would recommend his re-re-remakes of Avernum. Haven't tried the redone Geneforge yet. Basically anything from the Avadon line on mainly due to UI and resolution support that isn't all ancient and crusty even if the actual game graphics and sound still are at the lowest of budgets. ;)

I would second this:
Mutagen- very unique setting and most updated UI
Avadon- updated UI and another unique setting (my favorite actually).
Avernum remakes: The biggest and most well developed worlds and kind of the flagship of the company. But they are titanic in terms of content compared to Geneforge 1 and Avadon, so my fear is they might overwhelm a newer player.
They are amazing though.

In order from oldest now free Exile series then Nethergate, Avernum, Geneforge, Avadon (the shortest series with 3 parts), and Queen's Wish 1.

While you should play individual parts of a series in order, the series are indepentend so if you don't like one skip and play one of the others. You should probably also play the originals first and remakes later:
Exile I: Escape From the Pit, Exile II: Crystal Souls, Exile III: Ruined World, Blades of Exile
Avernum First Trilogy, Blades of Avernum, Avernum Second Trilogy and the remakes Avernum 1: Escape from the Pit, Avernum 2: Crystal Souls and Avernum 3: Ruined World.
Geneforge 1, Mutagen, and 2-5.

Be aware that your actions and decisions have no impact on upcoming parts of a series. If you kill characters in one part, they might still be alive in part 2 or 3. The same holds true for endings: There are one of several but only one considered canonical. If that's something you don't like you had better look for other games. Otherwise hundreds of hours of gameplay will await and you can have tons of fun reading and exploring unique worlds.
