How could they do this to Cutter?

So it's the original team and original composer, though not the original Cutter Slade voice. You never know how those kind of reunions turn out, but I'm definitely interested in seeing where this goes, considering they wanted to make a sequel years ago but couldn't due to bankruptcy.

I haven't played the remake yet, but original is free right now while the remake doesn't have a discount. the original has its own charm and updated to run on modern machines, so I'd say give that a try first. If you enjoy it you can always spend the money to jump to the remake.

I have both already. well, all 3, retail on the shelf (jewel case, no big box sadly), 1.1 bought here long ago and the remake on steam. I guess I might as well take another look at the original, but only when I get a new pc that can run the remake, in case I decide to go with that.

Wishlisted nonetheless... :D I have too many fond memories of both the original voxelated Outcast, as well as Second Contact (though I have yet to complete the latter). Excited to see this here! Hope this game does not disappoint. :P

Because it is your first time playing it, start with the original Outcast included in this giveaway. Play for a while to get used to the control scheme. Appreciate the Voxel graphics, story and voices. Once the gate is open move on to Outcast 1.1 and see how you like it. Enjoy somewhat better graphics, the wildlife, architecture and landscape after stepping through the portal! On way to the village you get an opportunity to fight small groups of Talans. You can also try to avoid patrols if this is how you wish to approach the game. After you have spoken to the NPC either keep playing to the end or start playing Outcast Second Contact.

Since it remains the same across all versions you will only ever have to get used to the control scheme once. The story and everything else has been kept the same as well. Story and everything else also remains very much the same. You will notice that Second Contact introduced some QOL improvements, it is now possible to skip forward during dialogs, you will ge explanations of terms in brackets next to words in dialogs, a nice hand drawn intro and of course somewhat better graphics.

One of the only real differences is diving. Cutter got a jetpack on his back which changes the way he moves underwater. He will not remain on the same level as he does after a right- or left-click with mouse or controller. He constantly keeps moving in an up- or downward direction. It was somewhat difficult to get used to this. Cutter's movements, he turned in akward angles, it also looks a bit weird.

This is why it comes down to personal taste and the question whether you can live without some QOL-features. Having played the original way back when it came out, of course it will remain my number one. Playing it as I did just yesterday, to see whether it, 1.1 and SC would work with Windows 11 Pro and while it is nice to be able to also experience the old versions in all their glory, my first choice for a playthrough would be SC.

Hmmm. The ending of 1 seemed pretty definitive to me, but if the original team is back with this it surely is worth a try.
I hope they managed to make everything feel natural, as most sequels of long established games tend to force things over and reopen the old package forcefully.

I didn't realize the classic version was also available here, wouldn't want to fuck around with the cds anymore, just go with 1.1. as it is, might as well check out how it compares to my memories, then how 1.1 compares to it, and I'll either go with the playthrough of the remake or just check it out after, out of curiosity.

My jaw dropped! xD I really enjoyed playing the classic Outcast. I even loaded the soundtrack on my phone. Thanks for sharing this update. You got me all hyped! ;)

and the worse part, you find those towers everywhere from Mordor to some fantasy kingdom in Forspoken. It really shows how bots are actually in power of the industry

Seriously hoping we get more announcements of games coming to GOG out of the recent THQ showcase, especially Titan Quest 2 and Tempest Rising.

Nothing could possibly recreate the awe and joy of the original, that's for sure. ;) I even own the original box (I think?) and CD! :D Having said that, I never expect to relive those initial feelings when playing sequels and remasters. It's near impossible, I believe. Nonetheless, I would still like to play this version. Worse case scenario: it would strengthen my bond with the first edition. A first kiss is forever remembered and remains unmatched. :P
