No Man's Sky: Beyond free content update is coming DRM-free on August 14th.

Jumpstart your engines by getting No Man's Sky 50% off until August 21st, 5 PM UTC.

Beyond will contain three major updates rolled into one larger free release. These changes are a mix of features Hello Games have been dreaming of for a while, and a reaction to how they have seen folks playing since the release of NEXT.

An expanded online experience will bring a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together. Meanwhile, VR support will bring the entire game experience to life in virtual reality. Anything possible in No Man’s Sky, NEXT or any other update will soon be ready and waiting as an immersive and enriched VR experience.
Yeah, if you're on the fence about buying this, go for it. As others have stated, the game has come a long way since its over-hyped, disappointment-filled initial release. I would say that it much more strongly resembles the game it was meant to be.

Also, I want to give a shout-out to Hello Games for (A) continuing to update and improve this wonderful game, and (B) not forcing us to buy the game again in order to get the VR version. (Bethesda, looking at you.)

falloutttt: game is absolutely fantastic!

I play it since day 1, and it only got better and better with every update.

ChrisGamer300: thank you, i guess i will buy it now then. I admit i have been interested to try this one out for a long time but been waiting for Hello Games to slap it into shape.
I really love this game, man.

I can play it when I'm really tired after work, to relax and all. And can play non-stop for days when on vacation or something. It's a true sandbox game. All you need to enjoy is your imagination. For everything else, game has it all for you. :)

"(B) not forcing us to buy the game again in order to get the VR version. (" Egosoft ", looking at you.)"

I think this is worthy of a spot on my wishlist now.
Oh thank goodness, a few of us over on the NMS subforum were getting antsy about whether this would be coming to GOG or not (or, mainly, whether the VR mode would). The original teaser trailer for Beyond didn't have the GOG logo at the end, so it was a reasonable worry. Glad to see it was unfounded. :')

NMS really has come a long way. Each update improves it in leaps and bounds (though I still prefer the procgen planet colors from several updates back). Looking forward to this next one. One week to go! :D
After their very botched and terrible release, Hello games has more or less recovered and fixed the game. And with a new content update... I don't know, have to see someone review the game as it is now and see if it is worth considering.

Game was fine since day one. Not perfect, but fine. And with every update, it only got better.

I din't care about those negative reviews on release. Got the game and had a blast. And still do to this day.

I played the "Demo" before buying the game. And loved it to death. I recommend trying the game yourself instead of listening to others complaining about the game and judge it based on that.

What planet are you on? :P Because on Earth, the post says:
coming DRM-free on August 14th
Maybe you got confused with how long the sale is lasting (until Aug 21st, which is 2 weeks away)? It tripped me up a bit too, but on realising it's only a week, the hype is audibly intensifying over here.

Oh boy. I guess I'm the one from another planet after all. :D

Thanks! And sorry, my bad!

Going from two weeks to one week just like that in a sec, now I'm hyped as well!

Hahaha, it's quite alright, gave me a good chuckle. Enjoy the extra hype (and hope you find some neat things on your planet - take screenshots!)

A lot of expected features were not there.

Though the super limited inventory space and constantly having to keep refilling certain items to stay alive was a bit grindy.

But i suppose it depends on the person. Some people just want to be busy for a while and shut off their brains while they gather said resources for a few hours, which it certainly might hit those zen moments.

Just recalling the intro Angry Joe did of his review, which sums up how i'd feel about the game if i was getting those messages all the time, making it a grind-fest and not an enjoyable experience.

Well yeah, it's a bit grindy. BUT, that seems to be the case at first.

Without spoiling much for you, there are ways to pretty much skip the whole grindy-gameplay. It may take 10 hours, maybe even more, depending on how you play.

In the end of the day, it's a sandbox game. It's all up to you!

Heh, thanks! I always take screenshots. The crazy things I've seen... can't be put into words. Therefor a screenshot is absolute!

Maybe you'll find this review useful.

Reminds me of Noah Antwiler talking about FF13. (Going from memory)

'it gets good 40 hours in'
"I don't want it to take 40 hours to become fun! It should be fun right away!"

The more grindy it is to slow progression and make a game seem longer, the less inspiration and good gameplay vs what they could have added. If you enjoy the grind that's one thing. But if it's merely there to make it say '80 hours of storyline gameplay' while only say 3 hours of it was actually anything plot/story related and the rest is to hit some arbitrary number before you can advance.

My own personal experience with NMS ( the original release version ) was different: I thought it was very fun and exciting for the first few hours, but then after a while it began to feel repetitive, because there wasn't enough unique content. Not much point in having an unlimited amount of planets to explore, when they all contain ( more or less ) the same things, and when the game doesn't provide you with new gameplay elements and interesting goals, other than resource farming.

However, NMS received several major content updates since that time. I've been itching to play it again... I guess I'm just waiting for a "complete" version, so I can get the best experience out of it. Do they have some official roadmap for future updates? They're not charging extra for all these updates, so I figure they'll have to stop work on it at some point, or switch to paid content expansions... ?

I recall that too; its a quite funny one. And quite true back then too :)

But by now its like a review to a completely different game.

That being said; still as it is; the story is more of a vehicle to make the player leave their shell (aka the starting planet they might get too accustomed too) and learn about the different sandboxy things NMS has too offer. If you are looking for an intense linear storydriven game NMS might not be the one you are looking for. Its more of a "there you are; now have fun however you want" thing.
