Noishkel: A HOT mess at that. I've been a fan of the original Battletech game that MechWarrior is based off of. I can tell you that intellectual property problems has plagued the entirety of the BTech IP for years. There's a number of really good videos on youtube about it, but the TL;DR of it all i that the original makers of the Battletech table top game, FASA, who then licensed art assets from the makers of the anime Macross. BTech got big, so when the company behind Macross was sold the new IP holders decided to absolutely fleece FASA for all they could. And even beyond that FASA themselves made a few bad decided themselves in terms of licensing out stuff so that the entire brand is kind of a mess to this day.

Beyond all of that though is that I love that game, and even though it's got some 'warts' I like it enough to pick it up here on my favorite game store.
This, and the first couple of games have mechs almost directly copied from the other ips, so it puts them in a situation for releasing it again. There have been some progress with the unseen (the mechs in question) so i guess there is some glimmer of hope if MS is willing to release here.

MW2 was one of my first pc games with Tie Fighter and Warcraft that showed me the pc superiority over consoles. MW2 and Mercs remain among my all time favorite games. You can still find them and play them on modern systems using MechVR. Of course i own retail copies of all of them and bought a new MW2 disc as recently as five years ago. Theyre still out there and there are still ways to play them

Awesome can't wait!

Had been playing and loving Harebrain's Battletech recently, running a merc company, hopping around the Rim recruiting Mechwarriors and building out my massive monsters...

... can't wait to do it all again in "real time" ;)

The really infuriating part is that it's not like FASA just ripped off the art assets, they worked out a deal and paid the licensing fees. It's just Harmony Gold, the new owners of Macross, just refused to work out a reasonable deal. The constant legal battles is pretty much why FASA finally went out of business.

Never heard of this 'mechVR' thing, I'll have to check that out. Some of the first games I ever played on PC was the three MechWarrior 2 games. Had the original, the Ghost Bears Legacy expansion, and Mercanaries. I too had the original hard copies laying around for a long time. But most of them were lost in a fire back in the mid '10s. :/

TL;DR: Spend 80 hours with the game, its great. Get it on sale if you're unsure but MW 2 - 4 fans can pick this one up full price without regret. Be careful of this games not-so-great storytelling.

One of the best mech themed games ever made. I think its made by the MekTek group, old fans of Mechwarrior that once made a fantastic Mechwarrior-themed game that essentially took everything from Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries and made it much better. MW5 is very similar to that fan-game.

Mechwarrior 5 is like a wet-dream for hardcore Mechwarrior fans. Not only is the action just like Mechwarrior 2 but balanced with some of Mechwarriors 4 good stuff (Mechs feel more weighty but are actually moving more realistically. Mechwarrior has a HUGE problem regarding weight classes, speed and agility IMHO). Most real world armors are 60 tons already, so nimble movement that still feels realistically makes a lot of sense, and MW5 nails this feel way more than any other Mechwarrior game. Its a good compromise between the speeds of Mechwarrior 2 and 4.

Without typing too much, I consider this a 8/10 game but a 10/10 Mechwarrior game. The only thing I don't like is the story and the small difficulty spike but you can easily ignore this with some practise. MW5 is also the greatest game if you love trying to finetune stuff. The costumizability and the action oriented gameplay is fantastic and way better than ANY other mechgame, including games like Earthsiege and Japanese mecha games like Armored Core (which is also fantastic).

And just for the record, I consider Mechwarrior 3 and 1 are the "bad" Mechwarrior games. They're both still great games, but its lacking a whole lot of small things that MW2 and MW4 did correctly.

For anyone on-the-fence, this game gets a recommendation but only if its on a small sale (at least 15 to 25% off). For everyone else its really worth full price. It doesn't matter if they're new to these type of games or Mechwarrior veterans.

Oh God, harmony gold is involved in this too? No wonder it's a licensing mess. Also why harmony gold still exist?

If GOG was to release the Mechwarrior and Mechcommander games, that would be a very, very bad day for my wallet. There is literally nothing that I would like to see on GOG more than the Mechwarrior and Mechcommander series games. (And probably Crescent Hawks - haven't played them though.)

As far as I know, there are no licensing issues with MW5. After MW2 they removed the mechs in question and named them the unseen. They were made just a mention in lore. I dont know exactly what happened, but they started bringing back the unseen a couple years ago. Although they did change their look, I guess thats why they were able to.

None of this affects MW5 and I think it takes place early enough in the timeline that all or most of the unseen werent around yet.
