We see the rend in movies, too, and it's a huge indicator that things are dying. The movie remakes didn't seem to gain the same power as the originals. Fortunately, not all gaming is dead, but these corporations are for sure. Indies are where it's at, and that means GOG's curation is a problem.

EDIT: On the plus side, that morrowind remake we always bugged Bethesda for? I wonder if we'll get it.

I'd personally like a remaster of Redguard that works easily on modern PCs.....dang, I loved that game.

As a non-typist I need to constantly look at my keyboard to see what I'm typing, needless to say, I never even made it to the first town as the controls killed the game for me!

Personally, I quite enjoy all of PB's games from Gothic to Elex. And yes, I quite enjoyed Risen 2 and 3 (I'm a sucker for pirate-themed games)!

While PB may not be re-inventing the wheel... and while PB still hasn't been able to hit the height of Gothic... they put out quality RPGs that I enjoy. If they could just find a quality action combat system!

Checked the Gothic 1 Teaser - it was remarkably awful. I guess it's the same studio Alkimia Interactive since it's based in Barcelona and the screenshots on their webpage are the same as in that playable teaser. If I ever hear Rhob... ahem... Nameless Hero say "Right" ever again I'll kill myself.

Waiddaminute? I thought this was already out (elsewhere), or at least I recall seeing some videos from like one year ago or more, which panned the remake for altering and dumbing down the gameplay too much? Or were they just preview videos?

Either way, I am interested in at least seeing the remake. I liked the original. It was not like the best game evah, but still quite enjoyable to play, quite an interesting small-ish world and ecosystem to explore, and I specifically liked how the game makers limited the size of the world, where there was lots to explore, but it was not an unmanageable mess like many open world RPGs are with their vast empty areas.

I finished Gothic (GOG version) maybe 1-2 years ago, and I don't recall any stability issues... That was on Windows 7 though.

For controls, did you try the "alternative" controls that at least the GOG version offers? I don't recall having big issues with them, and they were better and more modern than the original controls.

Gothic 1 had some serious stability issues on release even with latest patch (I had to remove EAX support to make it more stable). GOG version was no better when released, perhaps they updated it later on with some kind of wrapper. I don't recall an alternative controls in Gothic 1, only in Gothic 2, and classic controls were better for me anyway.

I just checked the game under Windows 7 x64, it runs well without the need to set compatibility mode or tweak the game files with wrapper. Framerate is smooth, video cutscenes are always in fullscreen even after game/PC restart, X and C buttons mapped properly now according to US QWERTY keyboard, before it was mapped after German QWERTZ. I can see that game version is 1.08k, I think it was 1.08j but I'm not sure.
As for the alternative control methods for me it's the same classic control mechanics (e.g. use + forward opens the chest) without option to change it. Settings looks and feels the same as before, if you meant that keyboard controls can be set either to default or to alternative setting this is just a control map scheme, both are configurable and don't affect the control mechanics. Yay. Another unnecessary remake. There are lots of graphics improvement mods and control improvements mods. For free, done by fans. Now the usual happens, someone acquires the rights, uses a more modern graphics engine to try to recreate the same game in an attempt to cash in on the big name. ... But Gothic is still an amazing game, even better with some mods, and at least for me there is no need to recreate it.

Which reminds me... did the game have female NPCs? Somehow I think it should have had, but right now I can't remember any notable female NPCs in the game...

My thoughts exactly....and i'm also wondering: with all the remakes/remasters/etc, will there be many classic game versions sold on gog at the old price points in say 10 years time?

There were at least 3 or 4 female slaves in the Swamp Camp and about the same in the Old Camp, including or excluding one from the game introduction (that person clearly was taken by Old Camp goons). I don't remember seeing any in New Camp however. They didn't have dialogue options, mostly it was one line something like "Don't talk to me".
