Titanium: Well, story wise, it wasn't too far out there. It started with prisoners taking over a male prison colony, and got trapped inside by plot considerations, and now they had a huge bartering power and a surprisingly short list of wishes.

But yeah, not gonna fly in today and now.
I agree it's plausible from a story point of view. Just seemed surprisingly dark, I played Gothic 1 for the first time a few years ago and was surprised when that bit came up.
Anyway, I agree with the other commenters who found the controls to be the biggest issue...and the ladders! My character must have fallen to his death dozens of times in Gothic 1 due to the ladder mechanics. Must have been a common complaint, since Gothic 2 didn't have ladders.

Well, thank you very much for reminding me...now I have flashbacks and my PTSD is back in full force.

*screams* "ladders in the hole...!!!"

Haha, I've made it! Now to

Well to be fair: Gothics ladder mechanics were so popular that Witcher 3 copied them. I am still convinced, that this is some sort of easteregg. ;-)
There is a song about "drabina PL" "ladder EN " from Gothic1DE with EN subtitles

Good games are like good people, always imperfect : )

At this point I'm in for anything that gets Gothic back in the public consciousness. Hopefully it's good. Fingers crossed.

I'm sure the perpetually butthurt will whine and cry about this remake for years to come, but I'm always on the lookout for new RPGs and can treat this as its own thing if it's good. Let's just hope it is.
I watched a gameplay of this game when it was announced, but franckly, doesn't looks like Gothic at all. One good thing about the original Gothic ia that make you feel like a nobody, you don't are a ultra power chosen one, you just one more dude in the wrong place, any NPC and enemy can beat your ass but you start to leveling up and notice the difference... This one on the other hand, looka like the typical hero that can do anything that they want, the know how to fight, it can survive a big fall and talk too much for he's own good. I love to see they included on GOG and have another Gothic game, but I would like to see a sequel more than this remake.

paladin181: Real talk, isn't every Piranha Bytes game a remake/reinvention of Gothic with a slightly different setting/story? Even Elex failed to distinguish itself and boiled down to the exact same 3 faction game play with nothing exceptional to add, except an awesome setting. The leader of the warrior faction is still a dick, and new players are still going to be shoehorned into the fighter faction because it is the first one and only one you truly encounter for a while. I mean I have seen almost no difference in any of the Piranha Bytes games at all, and I have played all of them. Risen was essentially a new remake of Gothic. I just don't understand all the love for overly simplistic faction systems, virtually nonexistent story, and terrible controls. Hard pass.
I think that Elex' potential was never fully realized. When playing it the first time the discovery of a tiny village had me believe that there would be a chance to form my own faction. The dome was another instance where this seemed to be a very real possibility. Neither of which actually was the case which was rather sad. Particularly in this game you couldn't but join a faction to progress to the next chapter. In my first run I did most of main and all side quests and I could have taken out the BBE without any help or faction association at all. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy playing the game, played it to 100% more than once actually, always ending up as Berseker. (For story reasons I guess or just because ... :)) It's maybe just more of the same, after Gothic and Risen 1/2, certainly their best to date if though it is less than it could have been. Maybe they take it a step further in Elex 2 which according to some news is already in a playable state. That remains to be seen though. :-)

Sounds nice at first, but lemme guess: the old version will be removed from sale and locked as a 'free' extra with the new version or even removed entirely?

Don't get me wrong....I love remakes/remasters when done well and priced fairly.....but lately whenever I hear such news one word pops into my mind: crap :|

Vollinger: Even more depressing when you realize most of 'em are inferior to the originals. Good luck to the fine folks at, uh, TEST DEVELOPER / TEST PUBLISHER.
Well i'd say "a decent amount" instead of "most", but yeah...I hear ya.
(also they cost a decent bit more than the originals, making it harder for poorer gamers to be able to afford them)

Swedrami: Gothic and Gothic II are some of those games where a remake is just utterly pointless.
Agreed....around the only thing I disliked(from what I played) was the controls.....and I am guessing they could easily be changed with a key re-mapper or game mod.

Swedrami: There's just something about the end 90s/early noughties 3D graphics, the "acquired taste" control scheme, the clunky UI, the rough, very German, non-prosaic tone in dialogue/conversation and the overall gritty "everyone for themselves" atmosphere that I think just cannot be properly replicated or recreated in a modern context, and especially these days where everything needs to be politically correct and doesn't offend.

Gomez' female sex slaves? I'd be really surprised if they make the cut or even just are alluded to.
I get what you're saying re the PC stuff: like with the upcoming Mass Effect 'legendary' Edition and other remakes/remasters, they might decide to cut/edit various things in these games as well.

allope: I guess this means if you love the original...buy it while you can, haha. Just in case they don't include it as a goodie..
This is probably a good idea for any who want the original version...just in case they "pull a shadow man".

Well that's unexpected. Hopefully they don't screw it up; the Gothic franchies already has a bit of a poor reputation regarding third party attempts to improve the formula.
Loved Gothic 1, was great. The screenshots looks amazing! ^_^
I'm curious...

fortune_p_dawg:
He has a point that every game since the Gothic series from PB have just been attempts at recapturing that magic.

While Risen and Elex may not be perfect, and so what if I liked Risen 2 more than I'm supposed to, there is nothing wrong with what they were trying to do.
I much rather attempts like that than the arms race around graphics that a lot of development was wasted on in the 2010s.
