F4LL0UT: Maybe watch this video by Errant Signal which explains with almost scientific precision that Dusk doesn't just play off nostalgia but meaningfully utilises design philosophies which may have unjustifiably disappeared into obscurity.
Then I'm sure it could do so with better graphics, rather than visuals that only serve to scream "retro!".

Also, sorry but I'm just going to take your word for it, because as soon as someone links me another "video essey" I zone out.

F4LL0UT: Also, this game was made by jefequeso, whom you should recognise from these very forums. I figure you can keep a certain level of civility and respect in this case, where the game is the result of a fellow GOGer's love for "good old games", which is presumably also the very reason why you yourself even signed up here in the first place?
I signed up primarly for new games DRM-free. Not that I don't still enjoy old games, I sure do, but they are a secondary concern, so to speak.

And I don't see why his being a member of this forum should make me any more (or less) civil. I don't think I was ever uncivil - whatever I may say about the game is in no way a personal attack on the creator(s), not in this case nor in any other. If I made it come across as one - I do apologize.

You know - it's possible I'm unjustly throwing a good game under the bus because of my utter, dejected tiredness with the nostalgic trends. But I can't help it, I'm really sick to death of it. Of pixelated or polygonal "love letters" and "spiritual successors", of Disney's live action remakes, of Weezer's cover of Africa.

That's exactly what you're doing. It's objectively a great game. I agree that there are a lot of games these days that try to make up for not being very good by riding the nostalgia train. This is not one of them.
Nice. Now I just hope to see Amid Evil here too. ;]

Edit: And WRATH: Aeon of Ruin too!
I learned of the existence of this game just now, thanks to this topic actually xD. So yeah, thanks in a way (thou I think that sooner or later I would eventually stumble upon it, eheh).

It looks tasty, pixelated and fucked up. I think I'll give it a try.

armitom: I'm also looking forward to Amid Evil, Ion Maiden, Wrath, funny how the ageless design of 90s shooters beats every modern shooter in the market right now.
A nice selection you got there, may I say.
Um. That's nice.

When exactly?

Sachys: Away at PAX right now

F4LL0UT: Too bad. Well, uh, good for him! Too bad for us, though. :(
jefequeso is one of the devs? I really really want to support homegrown efforts... Very tempting, despite not being great at fast paced shooters.

That's indeed exactly what you are doing, and I am not quite sure why constantly do so - except for "hey, look at me how cool I am". You might have notices that there are quite a lot of people here who welcome this game and have a lot of praise for it, and not because of any nostalgia, but because it is a good game.

There are many games and genres I do not like, but you know what - I ignore them and let people who like to play them do so without having to suffer me being smug and judgmental about how much better taste I have, just because they like something I do not. But I guess you do not have the same philosophy. in all these threads, you do not coma across as particularly clever, someone with good taste, or sophisticated or funny, but rather as a highly judgmental ass and a graphics whore who care nothing about a game apart from the way it looks. this might be wrong (it probably is) but it is the impression you give to me at least. if that's how you want to be perceived, that's fine - go ahead.

(yes mods, I do know this is a personal attack, feel free to edit and warn me if you feel I have overstep the mark)
Edit: On second thought, there is no point in drawing it out only to piss everyone off. Apparently I'm a lone madman again and dissident voices are unwelcome. I stand by everything I said, but I also recognise I should not have said it here.

As far as I'm concerned, you didn't.

Mods - I don't feel attacked, please take no action against amok. He thinks I'm an ass - that's fine, he has every right to.

You can (for a portion of it) take your time a little bit more than you may think - at least when not swarmed by enemies. jefe threw other influences in there too (though they may not be so obvious), but it also has easy mode.
I heard so many incredible things about this game, a lot of even the more strict critics say that this can't be rated anything less than a masterpiece effort for what it tries to be. This is of course just a minor reason I'm interested in this. I LOVE Quake/Doom and retro homages like those very often seem to be at least tempting. Same goes with Ion Maiden of course.

A GOG release seems like the perfect time for me to pick this one up. Can't wait to see this one released on here my dudes.

Cheers, Sachys. Hope you're well, bud, and thanks for the info :)

He's basically the game's only dev. Heck, he still doesn't even use a company name, GOG and Steam just say that the game was developed by David Szymanski (obviously his real name). New Blood Interactive is just the publisher. I think they did the multiplayer, music was also done by somebody else, but besides that it's entirely his own game as far as I know.

Lord_Kane: You and I are in agreement on that actually I get the humor and intent behind it, its just will fall flat with some people and cause unintended problems because only a few people will even accept "its just a joke bruh"
avatar
Blastprocessor42: Yeah, calling it a joke seems like a deflection on the part of the developer (It's just a prank, bro!). While I doubt this EULA would hold up in court, it does sign over a huge amount of rights to the developer, and even includes terms such as a severability clause. This crosses the line of joke to malicious incompetence in my view.
Honestly, it is a joke, just a bad one. legal documents arent the place for it, but the dev is truly a nice guy so I looked past it.

Thanks for that extra info! I am definitely picking it up at some point on here.
