I wishlisted this game on Steam on 8/24/2019 according to my Steam wish list. I was notified of the release a few days ago, and thankfully had the good sense to wait. Any day I can take an item off my Steam wish list to put it on my GOG one is a good day. Can't wait for September 10th to finally play this game.

teceem: If I understand it right; you're saying that some people that basically already had the ultimate version (minus the name ultimate) call it a "cash grab" because their game + all DLC won't be called "ultimate version".
Maybe you're referring to a missing cheap upgrade path for the base version? Because that story is just too silly...
avatar
greyhat: It is a very silly story but I saw an article and comments that followed about just that. That being charged for the Ultimate edition was a greedy move when people prior had payed for the base game and the DLC. It seems I spoke a bit out of turn. It was the console version people were gripping about.

Anyway, either way, I feel it is silly as the base game plus the DLC equal the ultimate edition...just not in name. The argument was that some people felt that they should get the Ultimate edition gratis. I saw the argument extend to the PC versions too. I am sorry I brought it up now. I dont really feel it is a grievous thing. As the two versions are identical.

The primary complaint is that on consoles, only owners of the Control Ultimate Edition will get to upgrade their copy of the game to a PS5 or Xbox Series X version when the next generation of consoles release.

Those console owners who bought the game on the current generation and bought all the DLC won't get to play it on the next gen without re-purchasing the entire game because they don't own the copy labeled as the Ultimate Edition.

I can understand their frustration, but it doesn't affect PC players, and they are console players, so they willingly lock themselves into a specific hardware set. PC players always get to play their games on new hardware when they upgrade.

Ah, seems I misunderstood what the issue was. Thanks for clarifying. I would be annoyed about that too since they are the same game. However, It might be hard for the publishers, metric wise, to keep track of all the editions. They might make it work eventually given the back lash. but who knows. Not really sure if it is a cash grab per say.

Anyway, I reiterate, I am sorry to have brought it up. It takes away from the fact that, like Lady-Jane mentions above, "Any day I can take an item off my Steam wish list to put it on my GOG one is a good day."

It is great that Control made its way to GOG. :)

It is definitely worth buying day one if you have not played it already.

Timbroski: If you want to go Nvidia, the point stands. a 2060 will be $80-100 cheaper within the next 6 months, hopefully.

WinterSnowfall: ... not if the prices for the 3000 series are as high as they are rumored to be. Chances are prices for the 2000 series will stay the same.
Yeah ... the impression I have with NVidia is that they seem to be trying to stack new GPUs as a new cost layer on top of the existing ones, rather than shifting things down. It doesn't seem like there was a 'budget-level' entry in the 2000-series.

We badly need AMD to get their act together and start competing properly again to bring down the prices.

My 5700 XT would like a word. It more than holds its own at 1080p and 1440p depending on the game. Some games it can even render at 4k and not break a sweat. It's on par with a 2070 in most cases, a 2070 S in certain circumstances.

If you're not a fan of that model, the 5900 XT is rumored to be on par with a 2080ti or better but it's all speculation at this point since neither the 3000 series nor the 59xx series have launched yet.

DoomSooth: Is there an option to play a male character instead?
No, weirdo.

Ok, that's interesting. Does it have raytracing support? I was under the impression (perhaps wrongly) that AMD were still lagging some way behind NVidia. If not, that's great news and hopefully the competition will help push GPU prices down over the next few years.

Variants of the 59xx and 69xx series are going to have hardware level ray tracing support. They're probably still a step behind Nvidia's new Ampere, but they're going to be about double the performance of my current 5700 XT, which as I said, is not a bad card.
The real question is how well cards on the level of the 3060 or whatever handle ray tracing. Consoles will likely use limited ray tracing, we've already seen hints of settings like limited reflective areas only. Presuming that plays out, hopefully owners of mid-range cards can actually turn it on without halving their framerate.

I have a 2070 and see literally no use for ray tracing on it. Even if I liked DLSS (which I don't) I'd still prefer the extra frames.
Dont really play games much these days, but i am wondering what is a realistic system setup to play this game with average settings? (currently using a i5 2500k/8gb ram/nvidia 1050ti -- will the game actually run?)

A 1050ti might run it, but I can't say how well. The minimum requirements say a gtx 780, so I'm guessing the 1050ti might be passable.

As for a setup to play the game on average settings, I'm not really sure what would be adequate. I played it a few months ago on high settings at 1080p. My system at the time was a ryzen 2600x, 16GB RAM and a 1660ti. The game ran fine except for some texture streaming issues that seemed to affect a lot of people no matter how good their system was. Great game otherwise though.

StingingVelvet: No, weirdo.
How is that weird? Have you never played a game that allows you to choose one or the other?
avatar
Lodium: Is there any cards that will run this fine at high settings wich doesnt cost a fortune?
Im looking for advice for cards to buy next.
avatar
StingingVelvet: Depends on what you mean by a "fortune." The 2060 is the cheapest of the mainline cards. There's a budget line with stuff like the 1650, but I don't know how well that would run Control. Probably not great considering my 2070 struggled with high settings even with ray tracing off.
The 2060 cards arent that bad price wise
the 2070 cards or cards like the MSI GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GAMING X are costing qute a bit though at least here in Norway
Maybe il just wait a bit more until the next line of cards drops.
Prices tend to get dropped a bit on older cards when new cards are introduced.

Im probably in the price range 300-400 $

Yeah do NOT buy anything now, I didn't know you were even considering that. See what the 3000 series is doing first.

Guys I'm not being a fanboy when I say the 5700 XT is actually a decent performer and I'm excited about the Navi 2 lineup.

I know most people prefer Nvidia, but keep your minds open. AMD is really stepping up their game with graphics cards now that Ryzen is a huge success.

I dont think AmD Cards is bad
Have used both brands and both have their pros and cons
AMD cards tend to be a bit cheaper than Nvidia cards though
i was actually pretty happy when amd got out the new Ryzen processors
When only just one brand is taking over most of the market its usually bad for the consumers.
