elgonzo: Totally agree. While i generally preferred installers in the past, i can't say i am still a fan of GOG's installers. I have observed several times that during installation, they write gigabytes(!) worth of data into the %temp% folder. I mean, what is so difficult about writing an installer that writes the files directly into the target folder without taking a gigabyte-sized dump on the %temp% folder?
avatar
StingingVelvet: Yep. The bigger games can cause a hassle with today's smaller SSDs too, since you need the ~50GB installer files, the temp space AND the resulting installed game. You have to have more than double the free space to install. With a 500GB SSD and a game the size of Control, that's a huge pain.

I tend to use installers for older and smaller games and back them up, then use Galaxy for newer AAA style games. Someday when it makes more sense I'll make backups for those big AAA monsters.
Yeah, I find the installers less maintainable these days. I have had issues with the larger ones and patches working smoothly. Especially when taking into account Galaxy and the stand alone patches. They definitely dont sync well together and have had cases of the entire game needing to be downloaded during an update. My poor limited band width cant take the strain.

I am in the same place as both you, StingingVelvet, and Elongo. For smaller games and games that are not being continuously patched the stand alone installers are fine. But definitely, until a games patch cycle is more or less complete, at least for major patches during the games early life, they are not really as accessible. At least for me.

At this point I just use Galaxy to install the large ones and then back them up that way. However, that is not say I dont appreciate the effort GOG goes to to make the stand alone installers available. It is added work that other store fronts do not bother with. So, I am not surprised there are discrepancies between them and GOG Galaxy installs.

greyhat: Quite a few games are DRM free on Epic game store. Even metro Exodus (when it had Denuvo) could run with out the launcher after the initial verification.

Of the ones I played most were DRM free. The only one that was not was Subnautica and Exodus.

AB2012: I'm maintaining an updated spreadsheet on this thread if it's of any use. It's definitely good to see the game here on GOG though.
Thanks Ab2012. A spread sheet of DRM free games is always of use. It is a nice source of information so people no what to expect when purchasing a game.

Oh for sure, and someday when I have a dual 5TB backup drives I'll make redundant backups of all those 50GB games. It's just not really feasible at the moment, or necessary really.

I dont back up many of the larger ones. But I have done so with a few of my favorites because I have a band width cap and get charges if I go over. But that rarely happens anyway. Most games are not worth backing up. Certainly not my entire library. haha

it just becomes too much of a head ache to keep track of anyway.

I hope you haven't forgotten that Alan Wake has been here for quite a while now after it's delisting.

Righto, off the list it goes :)

Thanks for pointing that out :)

greyhat: Have you noticed since the Epic store exclusivity deals more titles like Controi get here much faster than I think they normally would had they launched on Steam first.

;)
Seriously? I honestly don't know about that, and why is that the case, if you don't mind explaining. I kinda disagree with the whole exclusivity deal that Epic's been practicing. But I kinda agree with them giving out free games, though so far I only interested in one of their free games :D

quirkyhug: It may have something to do with the fact that Control is technically already DRM free on Epic. You need to use the launcher to download it, but if you run it directly from the game's install folder it doesn't require the launcher/any additional DRM. There's a few games on EGS that work that way, don't know about all of them though.
I see, so it's more likely a good move from the developers. And if I'm not wrong, Remedy is also the developer of Alan Wake, which is also in GOG's catalogue. Just surprised that it's going to come much sooner.
I really hope the Max Payne series and Quantum Break comes over one day.

StingingVelvet: Depends on what you mean by a "fortune." The 2060 is the cheapest of the mainline cards. There's a budget line with stuff like the 1650, but I don't know how well that would run Control. Probably not great considering my 2070 struggled with high settings even with ray tracing off.
This has me little worried, Could you please share what resolution do you use? I recently (start of the year) bought 2060 with the hope that it will get me through CP2077 and last for at least few years after that... on the other hand, I'm fine with 1920x1080@60 and don't mind sacrificing high-detail in favour of quiet gfx fan.
I'm very excited about this project!

Death Rally was ok, Max Payne was fantastic, Alan Wake was meh, Quantum Break is WAY too short but good. Fingers crossed.
The trailer for this game caught my interest and I really want to buy it, but then I saw this video (YongYea's Control video) and now I am thinking maybe I wont buy it. Supposedly this game used to be an Epic Games Store exclusive, and now this.

This doesn't really make me comfortable to be honest.

Pfft. And why should anyone of us give a flying fuck about what's happening with the console versions (for consoles that aren't even out yet) when we're obviously primarily PC gamers? Also, I hate when people are too lazy to include the relevant information in their post, pointing at some random youtuber's vlog instead.

Seconded. I don't want to sit through a bloated 10 minutes to get information that could be conveyed in a paragraph.

I really don't think you have to worry about 1080p60 with a 2060. Control has a lot of graphical settings, the engine scales down very well if you need it to and still looks great.

I play the game on pretty old hardware (960 and 960m) with a variety of low to high settings and get between 30 - 60 at 1080p. The 960m can dip below 30 quite often, but I still found it perfectly playable.

I've attached screenshots of the settings I use and an example scene with those settings.
