OK, I understand building the atmosphere of darkness, but am I the only one who consider the game, well, too gloomy?

Been watching this one for a while. A much better 2D Dark Souls than that "Salt and Sanctuary".

As dark as it gets?

Sorry, I'm not nearly 14 years old and emo enough for this super edgy dharkhness.

I don't mean to single you out but it is truly astonishing to me in general how many people these days say stuff is "too dark" when the trends of nearly all media are in the opposite direction. And I don't think there's a more inaccurate stereotype anymore than the "super edgy teenager" when in reality they seem to all be watching stuff like the Marvel movies (which are the epitome of sanitized "safe" entertainment). I want to get this game just on principle alone at this point.

There's "dark" and there's "dark". There's a game like The Witcher, where there's a lot of violence, blood and death, grey moral areas, war, burning witches at the stake etc. but in a world that also has humor, beauty and isn't trying to be edgy, and then there's "The Penitent One - a sole survivor of the massacre of the ‘Silent Sorrow’. Trapped in an endless cycle of death and rebirth" wearing a ridiculous iron mask as tall as he is with a crown of thorns and crying bloody tears. I mean, they seem to be trying a bit too hard, don't they?

To each his own, I'm not one for Marvel-type bland, boring brand of entertainment myself. I'm just saying, to me this kind of wallowing in darkness and sorrow and yadda yadda does not appeal. I like dark settings and stories when they are a bit more subtle about it.

Almost looks like Hieronymus Bosch horror paintings animated in a game.

Just tried the demo on Steam, seems decent although the feel I'm not convinced yet.

No key rebindings though, so you're stuck with the default controls and screw you if you have a non qwerty keyboard. :(

I, too, tried the demo on Steam and it convinced me to get the game as soon as it launches here on GOG.

Opinions about Broody McDarkGuilt aside, there's some utterly lovely pixel art here. The gameplay wasn't as Dark Souls as I thought it'd be (no stamina to manage, for example) but it still looks to have a huge interconnected world with shortcuts, secret rooms and the sort. It was also fairly easy, I pretty much breezed through the demo. Compared to Salt & Sanctuary where on my first playthrough I got my ass thoroughly handed to me by the first boss, here the challenge was more subdued and approachable. The enemies look far meaner than they actually are.

But that's based on just the demo, here's hoping the difficulty ramps up a bit beyond the initial area, or that there are more difficulty levels available.
