ChristophWr: So what are your thoughts about cloud gaming?
Very negative ones :)
ChristophWr: it gets pushed by the media for clicks
Undoubtedly true...but also, look deeper. Game stores, game publishers (and in many cases game developers too) have a vested interest in KILLING OFF the idea of ownership. Considering that there have been "scandals" in the past where it was discovered companies were influencing sites to put out favorable reviews for games, is it really that far-fetched to think the companies are also looking to sway the voice of the media in the direction that benefits them on a vastly greater scale, with streaming?
ChristophWr: So in general the netflix for games will never exist you still have to buy new games for full price.
I disagree...the big companies want "Netflix for gaming" to exist and will try their darndest. Another user pointed out in a different thread how EA abandoned a quality game like Mass Effect to instead put their full efforts trying to prop up a dying slot machine "game". The way I see it, these companies will push as hard as they can on squeezing money from consumers, and streaming will be the ultimate final form of that.
Also, doesn't Nintendo ALREADY have a service for their old games where you have to pay to access them, and cannot just make a one-time payment that would let you own them? And what about ALREADY existing services like GamePass?
The way I see it, companies would need to get people to accept the following ideas for them to then accept streaming:
-online connection to access games
-you pay a recurring fee to play games
-you don't own the game
-not only don't you own the game, it's server side and not even on your system
Mainstream people at large have ALREADY accepted at least the first three of these propositions and have also accepted the fourth to a degree in the case of many online multiplayer games. The decade+ monopoly of Steam being touted AS though it equals PC gaming itself, has ruined things for anyone who would dare want to own games. To a lesser degree, the decade and a half+ of consoles focusing on online multiplayer while killing local multiplayer off (for no good reason) has gone along the same lines.
It has all conditioned people to get used to the idea of needing to be logged in, and not owning. Getting them to accept that they are just streaming from a more powerful computer won't take much effort for them to accept in comparison. And, if the technology isn't quite there with the streaming, the companies will STILL be pushing it, trying to make it the "cool new thing" and relying on most people's herd mentality. Imo they will stop at nothing to get "Netflix for gaming", because everything has been building to this "victory condition" of theirs for generations.
ChristophWr: Cloud gaming could be a success and could exist with local gaming
While that would be an ideal world for people who like both, I believe it is impossible. When there is this strong of a push against ownership, the interest is in killing off ownership, not maintaining it. If ownership survives, it will be a niche market. Kind of like it already is now, but even smaller. Anyone who likes ownership but checks this stuff out, is really not helping the case for ownership any.
ChristophWr: Cloud gaming can’t replace a gaming computer but for people with less money and casuals it could be a interesting thing.
That's basically what happened with mobile. It's everywhere. Nowadays, mobile gaming even influences PC and console games, and not a good influence lol.
