Mr.Mumbles: It wasn't terrible or anything, but I don't quite get all the hoopla about it either. My main complaint was having to chase down upgrades/secrets to obtain better weaponry. What should have been fluid became a slog of hunting for items, and it eventually killed my drive to continue playing. The whole pinata-demon spiel become old really quick, too.
Thank goodness for the ever-vibrant old Doom mod community.
idbeholdME: Yup, the glory kills probably ruined it for me the most. You never have to look for ammo or health because of that. The worst thing is, that you get health from glory kills depending on your health. Why isn't it constant? Why do they reward bad players with more health? It completely kills any urge to preserve health because you can just F that staggered demon and regain a big portion of it freely. Same with ammo, just chainsaw one enemy and you are full on anything. But there is a slew of other issues.
Instead of dying, enemies will just stagger and open up for a glory kill. I was sorely missing the option to disable glory kills so that the enemies would just die.
Armor is just a second health bar. No reason at all to call it armor. Gone are the days where you were terrified because you had 200 armor but 10 health.
Checkpoints are absolutely terrible. If you accidentally touch one before you wanted, you have to play huge portions of the level without the ability to save. No possibility to manually save kills it.
The RPG elements feel tacked on and the challenges to get upgrade points force you to do things you wouldn't have done normally because they are outright stupid. I got most of them by activating a checkpoint and then dying on the next fight repeatedly until I got the challenges just so I could get rid of them and play normally. Great system... NOT
The main character is a mute asocial macho boy with anger management issues. "Doom Slayer ANGRY!! Doom Slayer SMASH!!" is the feeling you get from most cutscenes. The UAC is suddenly a hell worshipping cult for some reason?? I think I missed the memo.
The developers played too much Brutal Doom which is a plague that should be exterminated because it skews the perception of modern gamers of what Doom truly is.
You realise that you don't have to glory kill, ever? Just shoot them one or two more times. I personally only really use GK once to see the outcome, then don't bother. Yes, armour isn't what it once was. Checkpoint saves are always bad in any game, but it is an industry standard now.
Doom guy has always been that way, mute and wanting to smash everything and we all know that any megacorps are hell worshipping cults, it's a government requirement that when your profits exceed 1mil, then you are expected to change into a life leeching, devil worshipping greed machine like EA.
Brutal doom is ok. Not sure what you mean by "what doom truly is", it's a basic run and shoot anything that moves, in fact if it doesn't move shoot it in case it is thinking of moving.
The "secrets" and "rpg" stuff is naff, again though, industry standards.
Just be thankful it wasn't Call of Doomy.
