Vythonaut: There is a DRM-Free retail version of IV too. If I'm not mistaken, it's the North American one.
avatar
Bouchart: The Civ4 Complete physical version is DRM free. It'll run without Steam and even without the CD in the drive.
http://www.civiv.com/complete/

Exactly. At the bottom says it's available in North America. The EU version's case artwork has a golden tint and that version has DRM (not sure/ can't remember what type though). A while back I looked for the North American one (with the colorful artwork) on Amazon & eBay but haven't found it anywhere and although some sellers had the North American artwork on the preview picture of their listings, when I asked them about it, they all replied it was the golden version. And that's why I stopped shopping online; too much misinformation.

haydenaurion: Which brings me to my next question since I have no experience with the series, which version of Civ 2 would be the best for gog to get? There seems to be Civ 2 and add-ons, and Civ 2 Test of Time released some years after which includes the original content plus extra content: http://www.mobygames.com/game/civilization-ii-test-of-time
Civ II and Civ II Test of Time are two different games.

Probably a bundle consisting of Civilization 2 Multiplayer Gold (the base game and its two expansions) and Test of Time (which is a remade version of the base game with extra sci-fi/fantasy scenarios).
the first civilization game and civilization 5 would be worth it , never liked 2, 3 , 4 specially 3 and its pollution issues
Ah, pollution. Yeah, you had to have dozens of builders standing around to fight the pollution.

wolfsrain: Civ4 has patches that are removing DRM from the game and expansions. If you have the disc versions, you can still find those patches. So basically, Civ4 would not be to hard to be brought on GOG.
Yes, I know. I used them. It all depends solely on the will of 2K to bring them here.

I remember they even sold a DRM free version on disc (Platinum edition in North America) for some time.

And extremely fast landgrabbing gameplay.

Yeah. Build settlers, build city, build settlers, build city... and so on! :D
Here I am getting my ass kicked by Pharaoh. Why do I get the feeling that I don't wan the Civ series here? :P

Matewis: Thanks for the link, that was a very interesting read :)
It's interesting to note that he feels that on the whole Civ5's combat mechanics are better than the previous civ games. The biggest issue it seems for him is the congestion that inevitably results. That's one issue I have with it, but my biggest gripe is that compared to Civ4's stacks, large scale warfare doesn't feel as realistic.
So they are bringing back stacks with ATG, but of limited size, determined by what the tile can support. That's great! What would be cool is if an individual unit's performance is affected by the other units presence in the tile, or even if 2 or more can attack together. We'll see I guess. ATG looks absolutely delicious!

By the way, there is one place where I think 1UPT works pretty well : the scenarios. Especially because the scale is dramatically reduced, both dimension wise and time wise, so that 1UPT starts to make a bit more sense. My favorite is Scramble for Africa, where it's particularly delightful to have the Boers chase the English back out to sea :D
I never really gave the scenarios any thought, thinking they were stupid, but after a bout of boredom I checked them out in Civ4 and was surprised to find that they were sometimes even more fun than the main game itself.

phaolo: Ah, they were so good :')
I understand why they had to go, though.
avatar
Matewis: Yeah, it would've been too big a task to create dozens of videos of an acceptable quality compared to what the standard had become :(
Hm I haven't even tried any scenarios yet. Sounds like I should.

When reading the article bear in mind that he made the thing so he naturally doesn't want to go too heavy with his critique. I've read a lot sharper critique about for example how 1UPT affect resources on a tile and overall production.
Civilization 5 isn't a bad game by far, it's just not as good a "civilization" game as the rest in the series.

Yeah ATG looks to be a great game. I'm really looking forward to it. :)

It didn't leave much left for actual 4X. You had to constantly expand all the time which meant war all the time too. That's probably why I didn't like it as much as the rest. Yes I know I'm in the minority with that. :)

Get Civilization 5. You'll have no problem with that I can assure you. :)

Tarm: 1UPT doesn't make anything interesting or better for that matter. It's a feature to make combat simpler and easier to understand so mainstream gamers can understand it. Civilization 5 was successful in its mission. Even console gamers (Strategy games are severely lacking on consoles so they're not used to them.) can understand it.
Right, because moving around with 50 units in one stack was so complicated no console gamer could grasp it lmao! Civ4 is probably my most played game of all time (only contested by Eador and Imperialism) but the combat suuuuuuuuucked. I think Civ5 with the addons is better mostly because they made the combat like in Warlock.

Do you know the BASE mod for CIV IV BTS?

Oh yes you definitely should! I saw scenarios for the first time in civ3 but completely wrote them off, thinking they couldn't be anything other than lame. I mean, civ is meant to be a game spanning the ages. So yeah, it was a big surprise to find out that they were so much fun. Not all of them though. I like the ancient rome/greece ones the best, along with the charlamagne and viking conquest one. Oh yes, and the sublime Africa trade route one.

Part of what makes them so great is that they feel far more authentic. You know, because it doesn't take a city 20 years to build a library, or a group of soldiers 3 years to cross a mountain range. The turn time frames are condensed to weeks/months instead of years. Also, because only parts of the world form the entirety of a map, you get more realistic looking landscapes which also adds to the feeling of authenticity eg

Ok, one is IV and one is V, but you get the idea. Anyways, it's with 'big' versions of smaller landmasses like that 2nd pic, where I think 1UPT makes more sense. I agree that it doesn't really work in the normal civ custom game.
