dtgreene: Actually, I could dispute your part of your claim; not the "good" part (Secret of Mana is a good game), but rather the "RPG" part; collision checks play too much of a role in the battle system for me to call it an RPG.
Ki11s0n3: Ew, like Ys 1 ans 2?
Not exactly. You attack with weapons by pressing a button, and the attack needs to collide with an enemy to hit. (I believe the game still does a dice roll on top of that, so an attack that collides with the enemy can still be declared a miss.) You can also charge your attacks, and after you attack, there is a short time when any further attacks will do minimal damage.
Of course, all that is said in the last paragraph does not apply to magic. To cast a spell, you open the menu, choose a spell, and choose a target. No need to aim your spells, and no chance that the spell will randomly miss. Also, no cooldown between spells, which can be abused to spam offensive spells until the enemy dies. (Note, however, that if you use too many attack spells on the same target in too short a time, the total damage will be capped at 999.)
Also, you have a party of 3 characters, but you can only control one at a time (unless you have extra controllers (and a multitap if you want to control all 3) and are able to use them all at once). The other two characters are controlled by the game's AI, though you can have other human players control them.
