Well, yes. This is logical. China is a large market. Steam made a large push recently to enter that market.

Ergo...

BlueMooner: Steam just asked me if I'd share my computer stats for a survey, and i agreed. It then let me look at their results page, showing what percentage of users had what computer features, and what were the most common.
>snip<
No real story or point of discussion here, just wanted to share something that surprised me, though of course people are free to make of it what they will. The results seem public, so you can see them yourself if you want.

So:
OS Version … Windows 7 64 bit … 68.50% … -3.06%
not a lot of Windoze touchscreen OS used for playing games. :/

And that market seems to consist mainly of PUBG players. Yup, it's due to one lousy FPS game mode.

BlueMooner: I've also heard, but not read up on, that China has somewhat strict rules on internet access and usage for their citizens, so I don't know what their views would be on a distributor that has games with sex, nudity and violence. I think I even recall reading a thread here by a Chinese user upset that they were blocked from downloading gog games they owned.
It's a bit more complex than that. Yes, the government blocks A LOT of western websites. Google, youtube, Twitter, facebook,... However, I'm convinced that this has more to do with protectionism than censorship as we usually understand it. Blocking Western social networks has allowed their homegrown social networks/services to florish. Just have a look at Tencent: they cater almost exclusively to the Chinese market, yet they're bigger than Sony now. Tencent is currently working on their own gaming client. The steamcommunity-urls have been inaccessible to me for a few months now (the store & library still work, though). Coincidence? You be the judge.

As for violence, sex, etc: Yeah the purveyors of common decency might have some hangups about that. But it's not as extreme as you'd expect. As far as games are concerned, censorship is waaaaaay more severe in Germany or Australia. Chinese Steam blocks a handful of games (most of them probably because the Chinese are portrayed as the bad guys). Pornography is a no-no, of course, but the general rule of thumb is: don't ask, don't tell. You can sell pretty much anything on your store, but as long as nobody is made aware, no one cares.

As for gog users getting locked out of their games: that's thankfully been resolved for a long time now and was an unfortunate side effect of China blocking some content delivery networks. Once gog switched to a different cdn, there were no more problems.

rtcvb32: Been a few years, i remember seeing an article on it... I'll see if i can't find it.
Not necessary, it was just idle curiousity on my part.

morolf: That sounds like those warnings about the Yellow peril were justified...I guess non-Chinese Steam users will soon be forced to learn Mandarin and donate money to Chinese gamers, as tribute to the Middle Kingdom. Scary!

So you think the gvmt internet blocking is more about... letting local internet businesses flourish?

The thread I recall was recent. IIRC it had something to do with google and captcha, but my memory is hazy on the details.

I remember that thread too. I don't think it was more than a month ago, or maybe mid February.
I'm more surprised Russian isn't higher. I spent some time in former Soviet countries a few years ago and everyone spoke Russian (in addition to their native language) and used Russian settings on their OS and games. Lot of development happens in Russia too, now-a-days.

BlueMooner:
A GT 710 costs very little, is more capable and draws quite a lot less electricity. It is the cheapest card sold around here. How does saving one kWh a day sound to you? It also comes with support for Windows XP if you need that.

BlueMooner: I naturally assumed that English would be the most common language, but apparently it only makes up 18% of users. "Traditional Chinese" was lower down at 0.63%.
So who chooses Traditional Chinese instead of Simplified Chinese, and for what? Some old shaolin temple kung fu monk?

While the percentage is quite high, I guess it was to be expected nowadays. Chinese is such a big target audience nowadays that it seems almost all Hollywood-movies have some kind of "chinese part" in them, like in that Mars movie where they went to save Matt Damon (Chinese saved the day with their superior secret rocket technology), or even earlier all the apocalypse or Transformers movies where some shots were always taken from Shanghai or whatever.

And to think how excited I was when e.g. the Charlie's Angels were speaking Finnish as their own secret code language...

I am wondering what the Indians choose though? I'd presume they are also a rather big target audience, but do they just choose English then? Are they part of that English 17.62%?

My Steam and GOG is in English, of course. Well, sometimes the GOG main page turned into Russian or French on its own.

Of course.
According to steamspy, there are ~8 millions of Englishmen, and ~26 millions of Russians.
Population of England is slightly higher than population of Ukraine.

Let's put it this way: If it isn't intentional, it's a VERY fortunate side effect for the local businesses.

That might have been my thread, which was about getting locked out of my Humble lirary. Humble requires you to fill out a google crapcha when you sign in. Since google is blocked, you can't log into your account. Luckily gog already switched to a different verification system. Humble also did recently, but it only works some of the time.

You probably think that whole population of India has PCs and internet access... and money to waste on Gaben. :D
Bangalore most likely does. But can you compare it's population to population of countries you listed? :?

No, but I don't think so about the population of China either, outside of bigger cities like Beijing, Shanghai etc.
