This question has come up many times and there really is no way to determine the validity of a key without redeeming the game to a Steam account.

Exactly this, you don't anything on steam, you rent it, as you find with the keys expiring, they have total control over you.

Last time I checked, GOG also has expiring keys.

And Gifts do not expire. Keys also do not expire, unless Developers say so.

Fairfox: Does anybody know if there's a way to check if a Steam code is used or not? I have a few codes from Bundles that are a year+ old. I tried to trade using one and it was already used, which was obviously super-awkward; I suppose sometimes people 'steal' codes over time by guessing them, I don't know.

But yes, if I don't own a game on Steam I don't want to 'test' the code, because it'll add it to my account (!), and if I already have it on my account the message that I own the game supersedes anything about whether it's been used.

Note: Anybody jokingly asking for codes to 'test' will receive a virtual slap with a virtual ostrich feather. Virtual reality is the future, 90s style.
I have over 500 Steam keys traded over the years and NOT a single key has been used.

Your keeping of the key sucked, perhaps? Or the source was untrusted.

Give it to somebody that has the game already. When they test the key against their account, 'key already used' will take priority over 'game already owned' and they'll be able to tell you if it's still good without redeeming it

EDIT: I read the thread again and now I feel stupid. Sorry.

Fairfox: What-what! Raaargh, outrage! Or something. Nah, s'all good. I hadn't even logged onto the site to claim it until today, and it's one of the larger bundle sites. Meh, I guess I could always contact them over it, but some kind GOG user helped me out and I'm hoping everything's set.
Well, Humble recently (Well, I have lost time perception this year, so I what I think is recent might be old as hell) made available a list on your profile with a list of unredeemed keys. And some sites, like groupees (or whatever it is called, the one I used the other day to buy kickass Manos) has an option to mark used steam keys.
You might be lucky and be able to take advantage of this. Or not and slap my virtual ass D:
