Do you guys have any jrpg recommendations with a good story that also happen to be priced below $10 on GOG atm (be it the original price or discounted)? If not, maybe below $20. Thanks!

I see. Thanks for the recommendation! For some reason tho, the price for the game here is $19.99. Anyway, have you ever played Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure (a jrpg that's currently discounted here on GOG)? If yes, what do you think about the game?

It's a fun game and totally worth it at the current price. I enjoyed it when I played it several years ago, although for some reason I never finished it. Maybe I got stuck somewhere or had trouble with a boss battle? I should give it another try.

I don't remember much of the story, so I assume it's comparatively simple but cute. It's also more of an action platformer, not your typical tactical turn-based JPRG. But for me, both of these things added to my enjoyment, because I don't really enjoy most turn-based JRPGs with a lot of grinding and long-winded stories.

The only JRPG-like types with turn-based combat that I enjoyed were Chrono Trigger, the Costume Quest games, the South Park games and a free German RPGMaker game called "Die Reise ins All" (which is truly awesome, but sadly only available in German). Another great real-time action platformer JRPG I like is Fortune Summoners, but unfortunately it's not available on GOG. And maybe Okami, which isn't on GOG either.

Thanks! In that case, I'll be getting Gurumin for now. As for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, I think I'll wait until there's a sale.

I've played it.

It's a decent game, aside from all the cutscenes that are not skippable.

It is not, however, an RPG.

A couple other things to note:
* While there's the mechanic of timing your attacks to the music to get criticals, the PC version also displays a moving line of notes to allow you to line up your attacks visually, making the game more deaf accessible than the PSP (and possibly 3DS?) versions.
* If you look at older topics, you might see some mention of a bug in the GOG version that causes the game to crash in the ending, denying access to New Game +. That has, fortunately, been fixed, so that's no longer a concerned. I'd argue that it really isn't an RPG at all. Even if you were to allow games like Ys to be RPGs (I don't), I wouldn't even count Gurumin as an RPG.

Even things like the structure of the game, where you have discrete levels, and the lack of many elements typically found in RPGs (you don't get XP, for example, and there isn't a mechanic to replace that) would disqualify that game.

And I guess that's why I like it, compared to actual JRPGs. ;P

I'd recommend saving up for the Trails series. But Heroes of Spyria just came out and is cheap.

Currently on sale and around 10 coins, so it fits the "frame". It is a true JRPG, partially made from some old "Suikoden-Devs", so it surely is not "weak", especially at a discount. However, compared to a real Suikoden it is more of a modern "interpretation" which is not up to the "real task". Although, surely a good game at its price point.

Ah yeah, i cant judge the story because i currently lack the time playing it, although, i can tell: It is really difficult getting a good JRPG for ten coins and this one surely is good at least.

The issue with Legend of Heroes is: Below 20 nothing works and this is a SERIES, so you can not just play one game and stop playing it and i can promise: As soon as you are "moving up" toward the newest NIS-age... the price will rise even more than Chronicle Rising can ever rise. So, either you got the bucks for the entire series or rather be realistic. Those are not JRPGs but indeed, for a low price tag some of them, with comparable mechanics, are great to play. Ara Fell and some others at least...
