First of all, I´m no mac user. But that doesn´t mean I do not care about them as well. The vast majority of games offered on GOG are 32-bit-software. Apple will shut down support for 32-bit-software in their next OS-Updates. Will CDPR update Witcher I and II so they will still be playable on upcoming MacOS? And will CDPs GOG-Division encourage devs to update their games as well?

In general, this could be beneficial for Win&Lin-Users as well BTW: There are several titles that would even benefit a lot from getting a 64bit-version. There are masses that could use engine remakes. And so on...

In general, nothing will happen. No one is going to update old titles.
With the exception of Wineskin, DOSBox and ScummVW titles, I doubt any other games will be updated. More than likely you'll be seeing more native 32-bit games turned into Wineskin ports (windows version of a game run on Mac using Wine) in future. No one's going to put an effort reprogramming and recompiling old 32-bit mac titles to be compatible with 64-bit.

Blame Apple for it's stupid decision. You should ba asking Apple to develop 32-bit MacOS emulator instead so old 32-bit games and programs could still be used in 64-bit MacOS.

Apple doesn't give a shit about users' needs. Or rather: Apple thinks its users don't need to use old software, with their new hardware. They need to sell you new crap every year, and they want you to use toys not computers. The "Mac" platform is a joke, for gaming and not just that.

I find 64 Bit Mac very offensive as well
I'm all for cleaning up old cruft and compatibility layers from operating systems.

I'd say these legacy 32-bit binaries belong in a VM or emulator, when not on a dedicated retro system.

I agree with the others in that it's very unlikely GOG would go back to make 64-bit builds.

is it actually old cruft ? I got the impression they are talking about current frameworks/libraries.
Apple will just not ship 32bit builds of those any longer. No code is removed, since they are still going to ship 64bit builds of those code.

given that our current processors have maintained perfect compatibility with 32bit & 16 bit x86 instructions it would be a colossal waste to emulate 32bit code.
(and from what I recall, x86 emulation is quite expensive)

doubt GOG even has the possibility to do that. They usually don't have access to the source code I think.

Then you are on the wrong site, I think :-P

How so?
I just made a list for you:

Because GOG.com is all about adding "compatibility layers" between new operating systems and old games.
As far as I remember Witcher is using Wineskin to run on Linux an MacOS. While on Linux there is no problem to build and run a 64bit application of Wine, on MacOS there is a cpu conflict. To be more clear, you can run 64bit Windows applications, but the wine application itself can only be 32bit.
https://www.winehq.org/wwn/364#Wine64%20on%20Mac%20OS%20X

But there is maybe hope, as someone from Codeweavers (one of the bigger contributors to Wine) wrote in the Crossover forum they will present a solution before Apple will release the new MacOS version. Unfortunately he does not say how.

About DosBox: I know there is at least one 64bit build for MacOS out there . Not official and maybe not stable, but still someone is working on it and from what I read with good chances to work.

Yes, *between the OS and game.* That's exactly what I called for. Remove the old legacy cruft from operating systems, then add a VM / emulation layer / compatibility library / patches or whatever the hell it takes to run the old stuff on new systems without requiring the whole system to maintain and integrate all that legacy cruft.
Congratulations, you've just realized that the closed garden Apple is keeping is the Poison Garden.

Many Linux distros went 64-only in the past few months and they didn't feel the need to feed that killswitch to the users of the older versions via uncontrollable updates. I also hope GOG updates its games to 64-bit, but mostly out of the desire to keep their library up to date, because third party software vendors struggling is probably what Apple wants, and I say let 'em have it.

[tinfoil hat] It'll just be one step against their final plan of cutting out all 3rd party software altogether and replacing it with subscription based software. [/tinfoil hat]

EDIT: no wishlist entry?
