Trying to trademark the word CYBERPUNK? REALLY?
I guess the more successful you are the more asshole you get.
Seriously you are trying to trademark a whole fucking genre you didn't even invent? Name or genre.
Despicable.
You make me sick.

Happy April Fools, LÖLZ!

In reality, CDPR is trademarking the number 2077. So when the year 2077 finally comes, either the whole world has to skip that year and go directly to 2078, or alternatively pay CDPR royalties FOR THE WHOLE YEAR!

Nope, not an April Fools joke. This has been known for a few days already and is certainly true.

CDPR has taken over the trademark for Cyberpunk for role playing games from R. Talsorian Games Inc. and have registered two new trademarks for Cyberpunk and Cyberpunk 2077 for computer and video games.

If you don't believe it you can look it up on TESS (the Trademark Electronic Search System) or simply have a look at the attached picture.

But to be honest, I don't see anything wrong with that. CDPR has to protect their IP like any other company. It's not really their fault that the role playing system they are basing their game on has a very generic name that is also often used to describe a whole genre.

This isn't a CDProjectRed forum though? I do agree with you however, this is just like the space marine thing some time back. Will have to look into buying certain interesting words coming up.
I'm guessing it means that every time they use "Cyberpunk" or "Cyberpunk 2077" it has to be the same image in the same font or wouldn't it defeat the purpose?

And also, it's not as if people can't use the word "cyberpunk," right? But they can't use GOG's approach to it? Like, some douchebag throws together "Cyberpunk 2088" and tries to get away with it?

I wonder if they plan on having third parties develop content.

Or what? Have you trademarked being an asshole?
In other news, Jim Sterling sued by Kellogg's : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdQGC-TMpmg
They had also registered "The Witcher" as trademark and registering a game title/brand makes sense.

Do you honestly believe "The Witcher" is the same as "Cyberpunk"?

Depends... Cyberpunk is different than cyberpunk. It should really depend on the usage of the word. Yeah, haven't been banned they just removed my post.

Yo, stop huffing and puffing for a moment here, the people raging on the interwebz once again just don't seem to get the most basic thing about these matters.

Cyberpunk has already been trademarked from 1989 to 2011 by Talsorian Games and CDP already filed for registration of the trademark Cyberpunk in 2012. Has this really negatively affected your lives or those of writers, game developers and whatnot in any way? Don't think so. Heck, the reason people are only getting mad now (even though CDP first filed for this in 2012 and the term has been trademarked for twenty years by Talsorian Games) is that it really doesn't matter much.

And technically by standards of trademarks "cyberpunk" is a VERY uncommon name. Trademarking a term like this one is a million times less problematic than words like "sky", "king", "cookie" and whatnot.

Secondly trademarking a term does not prohibit anyone from using said term, just from naming a specific range of products this way. The alternative to CDP or anybody trademarking the term Cyberpunk is basically nobody really having a franchise called "Cyberpunk" at all. I don't see how that would benefit anyone.

And NOBODY would create a big franchise without trademarking its name. NOBODY. And it just so happens that CDP chose to base their next game series on a franchise which was already named this way. If you people really wanna get mad at anyone it's Mike Pondsmith or Talsorian Games for naming the original franchise this way to begin with.

And finally, if someone REALLY REALLY wants to name their product Cyberpunk they can still negotiate with the current owner of the trademark. That CDP own the trademark does not mean that they need to enforce it 100%. As a matter of fact decent guys holding a trademark is acually better than it being up for grabs where it's at risk of getting picked up and abused by jerks like King.

And as a bonus a little fun fact: There was a game called Cyril Cyberpunk in the 90's. WHILE the term was trademarked by Talsorian Games (although admittedly it was renamed in some regions, presumably indeed to avoid a legal conflict involving the Cyberpunk name).
