I used CDburnerXP for a while too, so that's another vote from me. It's perfectly serviceable.

Sachys: I am in need of a decent, free and preferably open sourced DVD / CD burning tool.
Having just had to do a clean install of Windows 10 due to a fubar dual boot with Linux, I not only want to make some live bootable DVDs, but also I generally have need of something that will rip cds as well as perform other general tasks in the future.
Does anybody have any good suggestions?
I'm wary of all the "10 best... for Windows in 2021" type articles out there.
Does what you need and very lightweight. Having just had to do a clean install of Windows 10 due to a fubar dual boot with Linux, I not only want to make some live bootable DVDs, but also I generally have need of something that will rip cds as well as perform other general tasks in the future.

Used extensively in my past with no problems.

Make sure you check for official link.
Absolutely not open source. Don't really know what you expected from this requirement to be honest.

Sachys: not a requirement. just a preference where possible.
As to imgburn ive had quite a few issues with it in the past (though this was some years back). Is it still getting updated?
Last changelog I see is 2013. As to imgburn ive had quite a few issues with it in the past (though this was some years back). Is it still getting updated?
I have been using it successfully on win7 without problems.
Wine is also a possibility for linux.
If you are interested or wish to rule it out due to previous issues, just try it.
Don't expect it to deal with any protections though.

Sachys: Not 100% sure, but the windows boot was no longer recognised (even though it was still there, as was the data partition) and every single possible answer to the problem also failed - as did trying to create a bootable win 10 USB from within linux. Eventually my neighbours kid sorted me a usb boot on his windows machine... and that couldnt find any startup issues, but also couldnt just reinstall windows keeping the data intact as it didnt recognise the partition types - so I had no option but to do a clean sweep.
Thankfully it was a quick task once i was at that point - i had everything important backed up and only lost some game installs really, but it was a slog getting there.
This really makes me wonder what you actually did, you mean to say the windows boot entry (on your motherboard) was still there? Perhaps you formatted the efi partition. Hmm... I know there's a bug introduced in Windows 10 that stores the MFT in memory so if you hibernate and boot into a secondary OS, changes to the MFT aren't kept. This only matters if you mount an NTFS drive though. Still, usually is pretty easy to fix a botched install like that, so rather curious what went wrong. Saying it didn't recognize the partition type seems poorly worded, clearly the filesystem was still working if you got data off it, though installing windows on top of windows might cause problems did you try deleting the windows directory?Thankfully it was a quick task once i was at that point - i had everything important backed up and only lost some game installs really, but it was a slog getting there.

Yes, everything from windows was there and 100% intact. Nope
Hibernation was one of the first things I turned off and has been checked to be off after every update I have allowed.

Unfortunately, something clearly WASN'T intact, the question is what wasn't. Would have been interesting to fiddle with the system, have a record of what you did. I screw around quite a bit with my system and like figuring these problems out... of course it's much easier when you have access to the actual hardware.

How about you stay on topic? I really cannot be arsed to talk about that facet of this any more than I have.dnovraD

Gee, I haven't thought about burning CDs since uuuuh, about the time Nero Burning Rom was obsoleted.
Have a look see here.

Another vote for CDBurnerXP. Nice, slim program that works fine for me since XP-days.

Thanks everybody!
Ive marked Randalators post as the answer as Ashampoo fufilled most of my burning / ripping needs, but I have also downloaded a portable version of CDBurnerXP and will be making use of that as well.
If a blue / mod sees this then please lock the thread to prevent it becoming a spam-magnet in the future. Cheers!
