The sad thing is the tabloids are often getting their news from the same sources as supposedly more legitimate sources. I mean, you have a couple Tweets from the family, the official fire department statement, the communication with air traffic control and a couple bystanders on the plane...

And then you write an article about it...it's all sourced from the same information.

Dozens of articles and its not like any of them have discovered anything really new.

And even the major media sources are making a big deal about her being in the ICU when everyone who even has the most minor of heart attacks goes into the ICU for observation.

I remember reading an article from an investigative reporter. He was doing a story about the sourcing of viral news reports like video game players dying in Internet cafes in South Korea and the like. He discovered that many times, stories came from but a single source lacking fact-checking and subsequent articles would claim it was fact-checked by the fact it was already published multiple times without ever attempting to contact the original source. He came to the conclusion that many such flash-in-the-pan stories might not even be true as he was unable to verify them. The state of reporting these days...
