In joint efforts with the original creators, Capcom, we’re thrilled to announce the re-release of the original Resident Evil™, the groundbreaking series that heralded the golden age of the survival horror genre!

This iconic classic is now available with all its original content intact, featuring quality of life improvements and enhanced compatibility for modern systems. As part of GOG’s ongoing effort to protect and preserve classic games, Resident Evil is now available on the DRM-free GOG store!

Capcom's Resident Evil series has defined and revolutionized the survival horror genre, with the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil™ 2, and Resident Evil™ 3: Nemesis being standout titles that have captivated gamers worldwide. While Resident Evil set the stage, introducing players to the eerie Spencer Mansion and navigating them through terrifying encounters and intricate puzzles, its atmospheric tension and innovative gameplay mechanics laid the foundation for the series' success. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis successfully expanded the universe, delivering unforgettable experiences that deepened the franchise's lore and horror elements.

That’s not all, though – for the complete Resident Evil experience, we decided to invite someone special to tell us something more about the series. It’s Suzi Hunter, also known as TheSphereHunter! In an exclusive video, Suzi will introduce the history of the franchise and tell the story of its originals’ revival, while interviewing some of the most interesting figures that took part in the process – including GOG’s very own Technical Producer, Adam Ziółkowski, as well as Head of Business Development, Bartosz Kwietniewski. The video will go live soon, and you’ll be able to watch it HERE – so stay tuned!

That being said – Resident Evil is now live on GOG, DRM-free! You can also wishlist Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, or pre-purchase them alongside Resident Evil in a special Bundle – you wouldn’t want to miss this occasion!

Theoclymenus: Will definitely pick this up, if only for the nostalgia. Played this on the original PlayStation back in the day. Everybody was absolutely raving about it, and it delivered. Incredibly creepy. Those controls though…

Thank you GOG and Capcom.

“Improved rendering options” but no mention of widescreen resolutions ?

Regardless, bought it.
Played the original on the PS1
I had hooked the PS up to our Hi-Fi to enjoy Stereo sound

Playing late at night when house mates had gone out, in the dark, and hearing Zombies shuffling from our kitchen!

I would like to believe that new Capcom games also appear in GOG.

Breja: So... I assume this is a big deal? I never paid any attention to Resident Evil. I think I've seen one of the Milla Jovovich movies and that's about it. But good on GOG, I guess. I was beginning to think nothing noteworthy will be released during this sale.

I mean, for me personally this is still probably the most disappointing "big sale", but it does look better than "GOG might be in some actual trouble, the best thing they had for the Summer Sale was Riven, a railway simulator and some rythm shooem'up".

richardjmoss: God, you're never happy are you :)
I thought I was being clearly positive overall. I can't help the fact it's not a game for me, or that I have no connection to the series, I just don't like survival horror at all. But everyone is saying it's a major deal for GOG to get this, so that's good, like I said.

Ha ha, sounds like fun ! The original PlayStation was really good imo. Nice varied choice of quality titles. I even played X-Com : Terror from the Deep on it and it was a really good version (OpenXCom version for PC is probably better though).

Resident Evil was a massive hit. Off the top of my head I can only remember Tomb Raider and FFVII rivalling it for popularity. I’m probably forgetting a lot of games though. Oh, C&C and Red Alert were two others…

Yes! It’s always nice to see more DRM free games from Japanese powerhouses released on GOG. Fingers crossed for scoring more of similar hits!
Are they based on SourceNext version? This is a big deal, specially when this kind of version for classic trilogy are known for being moddable, even as far as to make custom campaigns.
Congrats, gog, on yet another high-profile release.

Many thanks to all involved @gog and @capcom for the preservation of original content, here's hoping this collaboration can be extended beyond the trilogy

I remember two years ago I wrote a letter to Capcom asking them to release the classic versions on Steam or GOG. Well, you see, they listened to me and decided to release the games. Just kidding, of course, the release didn’t happen because of me, but it’s nice to see the original trilogy here.

Unfortunately, it is currently impossible to buy in Russia.

Here is the letter I wrote to Capcom.

Well done GOG for this announcement. A big thank you to Capcom for coming back to GOG. I hope these won't be the only games planned. =)

What's the ETA on RE2 and RE3? Also, can we also hope for RE: Code Veronica?

I'd assume further RE releases hinge on how well this trilogy will sell.
Now the real horror begins: attempting to master the tank controls...

Easily the scariest part of early RE and SH games.
