Hi -- I have a RCA Viking 10 tablet that I will be using on some long flights next month. I was hoping to play Phantasmagoria (which I purchased from GOG earlier). It installed fine on my 17" laptop ... but I am having problems getting it to install/play on my tablet.

I have downloaded DosBox Manager and DosBox Turbo so it should be playable on my tablet. I've tried a combination of AUTOEXEC commands without luck. I've read that there is sometimes a "problem" with installing Sierra games with DosBox -but- haven't yet figured out a solution (the sun has now risen -- I have been up all night).

**************************************************

I am using the commands:

mount c: /storage/emulated/0
c:
cd dos/phantasmagoria
setup_phantasmagoria_2.0.0.14.exe

**************************************************

I keep getting the error "This program must be run under Win32" ...? It appears that it is the "exe" file that is causing all of the problems...

Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Alright I had to read that a few times to understand what's going on.

Let me put this simply. YOU DON'T RUN THE INSTALLER IN DOSBOX.

Dosbox emulates a 16bit environment, thus you can't run the program. You have tun the program from your explorer or accessible from your windows system, NOT from dosbox. The installer will put in Dosbox and all configurations hopefully required to let it play from your computer, including a shortcut on your desktop.

That's because you're trying to run the GOG installer, which is a Windows program (and also includes DOSBox).
You should probably install it on Windows and then copy the necessary files over to the tablet from the DOSBox installation on Windows.

Using a innosetup extractor he could get the files he needs and just dump them a folder or zip to transfer to his tablet. However I'm not sure if the tablet is an Android one or not, I haven't looked that specific tablet type up.

Yeah, JUST looked it up, was about to update my post. 5.0 Lollipop.

In that case i suppose extracting or installing it and then transferring is the two options.

The 10 Viking Pro operates on Android 5.0 (Lollipop)...

When I try to install Phantasmagoria from Downloads (without DosBox), I get the error "Can't open file".

Under the DOS folder (where I have copied the files), when I select the "details" of the Phantasmagoria files, they show:

Readable: Yes
Writable: Yes
Executable: No

...and when I click on the "exe file, I get the error, "The file format is not supported."

Well two problems, first the android (probably) runs an ARM chip, and second the exe file isn't an Elf executable. Both of those would prevent it from being runnable.

...

If you don't have a windows machine to extract the files, and the inno-unpacker can't work for you, this may be tricky unless there's another option. I know of an alternate place to get the game, but the downloads are slow, and pre-configured to expect windows machines (although 7zip will extract it like it's a zip).

I assume the downloads didn't include a tar.gz file or a linux installer for dmg or something else?

What's confusing? You're trying to run an installer for Windows on Android. It's not going to run in DOSBox because it's not a DOS executable and it's not going to run on Android because it's not an Android executable.

Didn't I say that?

Hmmm then again people with tablets won't know about about the ELF file format probably... so I guess my comment was a little high level...

Yeah sorry, I started replying before getting to the end of the thread...
But yeah, perhaps I simplified it a bit so it's not a total waste.

True, from the OP I just figured simplifying it would be best.

If this was a Windows tablet we wouldn't have this issue. Being a Android tablet, well... better if he had more linux experience and tried this on an actual desktop system, get it working, then transfer his work to the tablet as a zip to extract so it would be as little work as possible, as tablets rarely include extra tools you want and need. They are as bare-bones as they can be.
I appreciate all the info you guys provided ... really didn't expect so many replies!

Already have the game loaded/working on my laptop ... and I will attempt to transfer from my computer to my tablet as a zip (as suggested). If, for some fault of my own, I'm not able to get it up and running on my tablet, I have plenty of other games to toy with on the flight. Or perhaps I'll have better luck with one of my Gabriel Knight games...

I'm much more of a creative/artistic-type than a computer/tech-type (pretty obvious) ... which doesn't usually help in these situations.

Thanks again.

I'm not sure why you're telling me this since I'm well aware of it.
Did you somehow assume I thought it was a Windows tablet?

(genuine curiosity, not anger BTW)
