I was really excited for Tiberium when it was first announced. A modern FPS set in the Command and Conquer verse? YES PLEASE. But then the project went dark and was eventually cancelled. There's a really neat Youtube video that explains the projects history. As sad as it is that the game never saw the light of day, it is pretty fun to learn about the behind-the-scenes elements of it and see all the builds the game went through.
I seem to recall a couple of Monkey Island games that got cancelled....
Van Buren and Starcraft: Ghost are the only games that comes to mind.

When I think about it I maybe don't miss out that much. Parts of Van Buren can be found in New Vegas, parts of Starcraft: Ghost can be found in Nova: Covert Ops.

Do you know the Van Buren Boy's sign? :P

You either get that immediately or you don't.
The original planned Privateer 3 as conceived at Origin.

The original isometric 2D version of Ultima IX circa 1997 or so (think old-school Baldur's Gate, and other titles during the height of the isometric cRPG) before Origin transferred the entire team over to Ultima Online, and then afterwards scrapped all the original work and engine when they finally resumed the project.

The original J.E. Sawyer helmed Fallout 3, aka Fallout: Van Buren being developed at Black Isle Studios before the studio bellied up. I'm sure this is one of the most commonly listed ones for old-school Fallout fans like myself.

A sequel to Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines which there was talk over at Troika Studios of developing (I think, it would have been very early conception period) before the studio, like Black Isle, went under. This one was a particular heartbreak since it's one of my favorite games of all-time. OF ALL TIME! /kaynewest

All of defunct Headfirst Studios planned Cthulhu sequels. I was a big fan of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth and am sorry it wasn't a bigger success. I suppose it was meant more for cultdom than stardom.

I don't think there was ever an official cancelled Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri sequel in the works, which is a pity because that's a game which truly deserved one, far more than endless cash-cow Civilization sequels.

So many of my favorite studios sort of dissolved, got bought out, or went bankrupt; Black Isle, Troika, Irrational Games, Looking Glass Studios, Digital Anvil, Gathering of Developers, Rogue Entertainment. Then there were others like Origin and Firaxis which went in a direction I was wholly opposed to.

Well, thank god for the proliferation of indies and the kickstarter model. Frostpunk is the most I've been excited about an upcoming game in 10 years.
Timesplitters 4. It was such a great and hilarious franchise! I still play them on my PS2 from time to time! :P I was so sad when the developers were bought out and the project was cancelled... :( Would be cool to see the orginal games here! ;P Also, a few people already mentioned it before, but the original Prey 2 would have been really fun I think. The first (original, not the reboot) was very fun and unique and the thought of being an alien hunting bounty hunter would have been so cool! :P

I know this would never happen in our world as is, but I really think that cancelled games (especially ones that were very close to being finished and released) should be released to the public to let others try and finish it or play what was already made! Like they do nothing just sitting and collecting dust in hard drives from the publishing companies that own them. :/
This might have been pretty cool:

The original cast had already recorded their voices. Pity it didn't get made.
The Resident Evil 5 that was scrapped for the one we have now.
The Full Throttle sequel. Canceled when Lucasarts killed off their adventure gaming division.
maybe it will be revived the way the San N Max sequel was.

Lucas arts, circa 2003 closed it's adventure gaming division. Killed off in development were Monkey Island 5, the Sam n Max sequel, and a Full Throttle sequel.

I would love to have played Simon The Sorcerer 5 (or it may have been 6?) from StoryBeasts.

That was going to be a return to his roots, with a British accent.

I see this and raise you the Resident Evil 4 that was scrapped for the one that released.

Also seconding all the old posts in this thread regarding Sadness and the REAL Fallout 3/"Van Buren".

Pharlander: Fallout 3, hands down. I remember reading some of the dialogue tree options from the design document and I was blown away by the sheer depth of how downright sneaky, backstabbing, conniving and devious your character could be.

There is no true depth to dialogue options in games, anymore. What started with the Tex Murphy games and was continued by Mass Effect has piddled out in what became Fallout 4.
But...
>true depth to dialogue options in games
>Mass Effect
...pick one, ha.
There was preliminary work on a Full Throttle movie way back in the day

did that guy say there was depth in the Mass Effect dialogues? I mean, I only played for 10 minutes but I turned it off BECAUSE OF THE AWFUL DIALOGUES

The only game I can think of is Mega Man Legends 3.

It was released, removed but not cancelled.
